Book Review: Ruby

What kobo.com says:

The newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection! The epic, unforgettable story of a man determined to protect the woman he loves from the town desperate to destroy her—this beautiful and devastating debut heralds the arrival of a major new voice in fiction.

Ephram Jennings has never forgotten the beautiful girl with the long braids running through the piney woods of Liberty, their small East Texas town. Young Ruby, “the kind of pretty it hurt to look at,” has suffered beyond imagining, so as soon as she can, she flees suffocating Liberty for the bright pull of 1950s New York. Ruby quickly winds her way into the ripe center of the city–the darkened piano bars and hidden alleyways of the Village–all the while hoping for a glimpse of the red hair and green eyes of her mother. When a telegram from her cousin forces her to return home, thirty-year-old Ruby Bell finds herself reliving the devastating violence of her girlhood. With the terrifying realization that she might not be strong enough to fight her way back out again, Ruby struggles to survive her memories of the town’s dark past. Meanwhile, Ephram must choose between loyalty to the sister who raised him and the chance for a life with the woman he has loved since he was a boy.

Full of life, exquisitely written, and suffused with the pastoral beauty of the rural South, Ruby is a transcendent novel of passion and courage. This wondrous page-turner rushes through the red dust and gossip of Main Street, to the pit fire where men swill bootleg outside Bloom’s Juke, to Celia Jennings’s kitchen where a cake is being made, yolk by yolk, that Ephram will use to try to begin again with Ruby. Utterly transfixing, with unforgettable characters, riveting suspense, and breathtaking, luminous prose, Ruby offers an unflinching portrait of man’s dark acts and the promise of the redemptive power of love.

What I Say: I started reading this book while in the Dominican, during flights to and from Miami for the cruise and finished it on my recent business trip to New York City. I really didn’t LOVE this book. It was more alike. I didn’t love the struggle and the tough subject of prostitution, women’s abuse and rights. I guess I really do live in a rose-coloured bubble of positivity these days. However, the book was very well written. The prose was elegant and excellent. Seeing the love of a man so strong that can help heal a women’s brokenness was beautiful but I definitely need to pick up a light-hearted subject next that does not deal with any heaviness as my next read.

And we’re making progress!

I’m in the process of interviewing for a handful of roles after diligently applying and working my network!

Out of 2 business ideas, my husband and I picked one that were flushing out.

We reviewed our monthly budget and made cuts in case we have to buckle down after my severance runs out.

I completed my first UGC campaign and I’ve applied to a ton more.

And I’m going to enjoy funemployment this week with my twins!

If you need to button up your budget I’ve created a template you can grab from the link in my bio!

I loved the heck out of July! What’s something you I loved the heck out of July! What’s something you did this month that created a core memory?!?

We’re obsessed with seasonal bucket lists over here. We created a fun list this summer and have knocked off most of the items already. Just a few more for August!

Do you have a summer bucket list??

I’ve started doing co-working sessions with my wedding planner @laurs.sinclair & wedding photographer @iam.stephaniemason. They are luckily best friends and 8 years later adopting me into their friend circle which is giving me life in the friendship department!

In the summer, for our monthly date night we send the twins to my parents for a sleepover and go golfing together! We’ve been trying out courses close to home so we can race home to our puppy and eat a lazy dinner together!

What’s your favourite course in the west end of Ottawa?

The epic yes day continues! We started this tradition on our twins birthday last year and did it again.

This year we had breakfast pizza, went rock climbing, ate cotton candy, Mac and Cheese, Banaba Pudding, went mini putting and had Boston Pizza for dinner!

Everyone was exhausted and had hurting tummies!

Passed out from the sugar crash!

Overheard the next morning: Next year I’m only choosing one treat so my tummy doesn’t hurt.

We eat very healthy but we want them to know what “fun” things taste like but now they understand why we don’t normally eat alllllll the treats!

Something I wish I had learned in my teens was tha Something I wish I had learned in my teens was that letters did not define my worth.

My parents taught me to work hard, but along the way, I sought their acceptance in my grades, not just because I am.

That took me years to unpack.
