Book Review: Better Than Before

7 / 15 / 157 / 4 / 22

I posted at the end of April that I was diving into Gretchen Rubin‘s new book Better Than Before. It took me a while to finish as I picked up some other books in between reading this one but I’m finished so here is my review!

What kobo.com says:

From the author of the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home comes a book that tackles the question: How do we make good habits that are easy, effortless, and automatic?
Habits are the invisible architecture of our lives. Rubin provides an analytical and scientific framework from which to understand these habits–as well as change them for good. Infused with her compelling voice and funny stories, she illustrates the core principles of habit formation with dozens of strategies that she tests out on herself and others. In doing so, she discovers answers to questions such as:

• At times, I’ve picked up a habit overnight, but other times, it’s taken years to develop. Why?

• Why do some people resist habits, while others adopt them eagerly?

• I want to help my child/spouse/colleagues make a change. What can I do?

• Why do I resist other people’s advice on how to change, even if I think they are right?

• How do I make good habits convenient and easy?

Rubin provides tools to help readers better understand themselves, and presents a clear, practical menu of strategies so readers can take an individualized approach. She tackles each strategy herself, and in doing so shows us the importance of knowing ourselves, and our own habit-tendencies. Armed with self-knowledge, we can pursue the habits in ways that will truly work for us, not against us. Going to the gym can be as easy, effortless, and automatic as putting on a seatbelt. We can file expense reports, take time for fun, or pass up that piece of carrot cake without having to decide. With the foundation of good habits, we can build a life that reflects our values and goals.

Better Than Before

What I say: I really enjoyed how Gretchen Rubin researched habits. I love her fresh take on habit making really is based on what type of person you are and practical advice for how to attack new habits and make everyday living better. As an Upholder (someone who responds readily to outer and inner expectations) and an Obliger (someone who meets outer expectations, but struggles to meet expectations they impose on themselves) I enjoyed reading this book because I’m very similar to Gretchen in personality. I’m constantly doling out advice to others to help them improve their world without thinking if it even applies to their style of learning or if they even want new habits. The book gave me a great appreciation for my need to help fix others. It hammered home that I’m someone that needs to abstain from bad habits to ensure I’m staying on track. It also confirmed that I need to schedule and have someone keep me accountable to ensure I’m adapting a new good habit into my life. My favourite quote from the book is near the end and exactly speaks to my lifestyle and habit-making.

Perusing the local Facebook Mom's Groups I was sho Perusing the local Facebook Mom's Groups I was shocked to hear how many moms are on anti-depressants.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I do not know their situations. I do not know the depth of their mental health issues. And I won't pretend to. But I do know my own. I do know I gave birth during a pandemic. I do know I experienced isolation and stress. I do know that I was diagnosed with PTSD from birth trauma. I do know that I had postpartum depression and anxiety. I do know that I pictured walking out of our front door and never coming home. I do know that I pictured what my husband and kid's lives would be like without me in it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I know the pain and I KNOW it took an army of holistic solutions to pull me out of the depths of that depression. It wasn't one thing. It was everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was the group talk therapy I went to weekly. It was focusing on getting a full 8 hours of sleep. It was morning meditation instead of IG scrolling. It was somatic breathwork. It was leaning on my husband and family for support. It was hiring a nanny. It was ensuring I spend time daily in self-care. It was asking for help.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here if you want to talk or figuring how to incorporate different things into your life to support you.
During our Values Reset retreat we did dream about During our Values Reset retreat we did dream about which vehicles we want to drive. I've never been one to really get obsessed with a make and model. I leave that to my husband.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, I do value having vehicles with a high resell value so it makes it easier to buy new vehicles every few years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also added travel to this values statement because I want a life of variety and I want to gift that to our kids so I thought it would be fun to focus on different methods of transportation as we plan trips over the coming years with them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I thought I’d share this now as we started shopping for a new large SUV that can fit both kids, both dogs and bags for road trips to the cottage and North Bay.
Here is how we value our family.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My favourite part of this statement is our "we grow relationships individually within the family" and this is why once a month we book a mommy/daughter | daddy/son date and then a mommy/son date | daddy/daughter date!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ps. This is a monthly Asana task for me at the beginning of the month to book into our calendars so we make it happen.

My husband and I walk the dogs when our nanny arrives so we can get morning sunlight.

I work a full time job in Web3 that’s lights me up. I get to build my dōTERRA business in a way that lights me up. Ps. It’s BOGO week this week and I get to partake in passion projects like publishing a book around thriving with an autoimmune disease in my spare time.

I get to hug my babies multiple times a day, walk or run out of my home office when the twins need me and kiss them before they go for walks or naptime.

Right now my time values and how I spent my day are pretty aligned. There are a few things I want to upgrade.

I want to get to a point where I’m working out midday. And I’d like to get down to a 3-4 day work week.
