Alpha Female Friday – Robyn Baldwin

8 / 26 / 168 / 26 / 16

Every Friday I usually feature a woman that I adore. They exude all the qualities of an Alpha Female and I want to dig into their lives to get some nuggets of knowledge to help us all live happier, healthier lives balancing life & work. Since my book launched yesterday my podcast editor Allegra suggested we interview me this week on the podcast to dive into my life a bit more.

Definition of an Alpha Female

An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony.

Type A Alpha Females often come across as strong willed and selfish. When we stay true to our authentic selves and stay true to our mission we shine. A true Alpha Female puts the needs of herself first without sacrificing her principles or dignity. She fills up her cup or gas tank first so that she has enough energy for her friends, family, and coworkers. A an Alpha Female strives for synergy with the world around her. She wants a perfect work/life balance but knows that it requires being true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with the people in her life.

Meet Me! Robyn Baldwin!

The Face Headshot

If you haven’t met me yet and found this page randomly here is My Story and a quick little bio below:

Cyberbullying, Our Ego & Keep On Keeping On

8 / 19 / 157 / 4 / 22

WARNING: I did something I shouldn’t have done. I read a thread cyberbullying me. My ego got rocked and I learned how to keep going on.

When I googled myself yesterday to see what the 1st 2 pages of my google rankings are looking like I was shocked to find an internet thread attacking me. This site is pure hatred and shouldn’t exist but then again I can’t control the world so I should’ve known this would eventually happen by the number of things I share publicly and how vulnerable I try to be.

Mistake Number 1: I clicked on the link and read the entire thread. It is my fault for doing that and no one else’s.

Mistake Number 2: I let my ego be upset by what I read. Yes, I am human and tried to explain that it was ok to cry but I let myself read horrible words that I know were going to be in the post.

Correction Number 1: I immediately sought out my family & friends who would put me back into the right frame of mind. I shared a picture of trolls and wanted to hug trolls on my Instagram to reach out to them with positivity and get back the positivity I needed to pull myself out of upset.

Correction Number 2: I posted in the private Facebook group Xen Bliss Community because I knew I would get the immediate love (even if it was tough) that I needed to be put back into a safe space of positivity and awesomeness.

If you have ever dealt with Cyber Bullies or Anonymous Hate I have 3 things I’d like you to do.

1. I create a safe space for myself to keep on being Robyn Baldwin – Alpha Female [insert your name here]. I’m not going to change who I am or what I put out there. For those of you who think I’m your cup of tea and give back all the positivity, I put out there, THANK YOU. You are my tribe and I adore you thank you for being exactly what I need on a daily basis.

2. I did learn from the internet trolls that I can do a better job of explaining what Alpha Female means to me. I also learned that I may have met one of them in person and didn’t come off across the way they thought. I can always be kinder, I can always fight through being shy when meeting people and if you don’t like me then we weren’t meant to vibe and connect 🙂

HAVE AN AMAZING DAY! You too internet trolls if you read this! You deserve to have an amazing day too!

Real Talk Real Women The Book

11 / 27 / 1311 / 27 / 13

On May 30, 2013 I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Miriam Khalladi. Miriam started a video series on YouTube where she interviews inspirational women from all walks of life, many involved in different parts of the fitness industry. Here is my interview below:

Later this year she decided to take her video series one step further and gather 100 women to write a book together. It is a compilation and culmination of our lessons learned in one book.

It is broken out into several volumes. Volume 1 is about Loving Yourself, Volume 2 is about Never Giving Up, Volume 3 is about Achieving Success, Volume 4 is about Finding Balance and Volume 5 is about Making A Difference. The book is available in it’s digital edition today ($19.85) and the print edition will be released on December 14th! You can go here to view the website and purchase the book if you’re already excited to read it!

When Miriam asked me to write a chapter I re-watched my video interview with her to get inspiration for what to write about. During our interview, I talked about broken heel moments and failures in my life and what to do when they happen and how they can be blessings in our lives.

I chose to write about 10 things, habits and coping methods you can do to get through a failure moment in your life.

My Chapter

Miriam has graciously given the authors copies to give away. I would love to gift 5 of my readers with a copy. There are 3 simple ways to enter below in the widget:

1. Posting a blog comment (I’d love to know what you’re going through right now and why you could use a copy of this inspirational book)

2. Follow me on Twitter

3. Tweet about the giveaway

Winners will be chosen at random by the widget below.  The contest ends December 4th at midnight EST.

My Story – This Past Year

8 / 25 / 135 / 3 / 19

A Year

One day I will share the details of my year story so I can potentially help others but it’s still raw some days and the story still involves another person so I’m going to just stick to broad stroke events and how it shaped what I’ve done for myself this year (in the interest of my blog therapy this morning).

January 2011: I got engaged to the man I thought I would spend my life with.

November 2011: I was let go from my agency job two weeks after I found out my fiancee (at the time) was dealing with scary health issues.

February 2012: I started an amazing new job at UM Canada with an amazing team who little did they know were giving me a work life foundation to heal myself and truly save myself over the year.

July 2012: One month before my wedding I made a bad decision that caused a series of events to happen that led to my fiancee (at the time) and I to “postpone/cancel” our wedding while we worked through our issues.

August 2012: 5 days before the “day of our wedding” while we were trying to work things out but were failing miserably I made a decision that the man I thought I knew and cared for was not going to be in my life forever and for my health and safety and self worth said goodbye. I spent a lot of time crying this month. I spent a lot of time feeling lost. I spent a lot of time on Pinterest reading quotes. I spent a lot of time on the phone or with my mom rushing to my side in Toronto. I spent a lot of time leaning on friends. This was just not a good month.

September 2012: I went on my honeymoon with my mother and began slowly a healing process that would take a year and is still happening to this day. I came home from that trip to find out the real reason why the relationship had been mostly a lie which in my gut I had known all along but was desperately trying to hold onto hope and love above all else. This month would mark the month that I decided it was ok to “move on”. I thankfully had two trade shows with my supplement sponsors that would keep me busy so I didn’t have to think, one which included a trip to Vegas with amazing athletes and women who I connected with. If you’ve seen me talk of Kyla on social media you’ll know that a friendship of a lifetime can be forged in an instant.

20130825-084442.jpg20130825-084534.jpg

October 2012: I started dating a man. Yes it was too soon. No I didn’t want anyone to tell me that. The relationship would last three months. Some may call it a rebound. I call it the relationship that showed me what I want and need in a man. What I want and need in myself. I found out I love adventures and experiences and had been missing those in my life. During this time I learned to love myself again and knew that I had to bring back all the things in my life that make me happy that I had been sacrificing. This man also gets the credit for helping me truly define what an Alpha Female means in my eBook and inspiring goals such as Tough Mudder and more traveling. I also watched my love Krysten run her first marathon. I would see determination and fight in this woman and would be inspired. I would run my first O course on my own and feel bad ass. I would decide to embrace my love for running again and get all the necessities to run all fall and winter.

O Course Running w/ Krysten

December 2012: My “bestie” as we like to refer to each other moved home from Norway. We had only met twice before. On her wedding day (we took one photo together) and the next weekend on a mutual couple friends wedding day. We instantly hit it off and I’ve cherished her friendship over the past year. She’s been a therapist from afar and I immediately rushed to see her when she got home so we could spend quality time with her horses. I also truly reconnected with another “bestie” who had cut me out of her life for a year. It was supposed to happen that way but I had gone through a year of trauma without her by my side. She’s truly my little sister, we fight like siblings at times, but she came back into my life for a reason and it has been so good to build our friendship again. I lost other friends this month too. I never sought the reasons why. I just had to let it be. Too much loss in one year for me to dwell on. I needed to focus on me.

20130825-084820.jpg20130825-084805.jpg

January 2013: I created my own happiness project, set commandments for myself, themes for each month of the year and clear short & long term goals. I had always done goal setting before but this year was to take on new meaning. In January, I simply had to get back into a routine for me. Eat 5-6 healthy meals, drink 4L of water a day and get 8 hours of sleep. I needed to get back into the workouts that I love. Mornings; lifting weights in the gym, running once to twice a week (started back up with my lululemon run club, met a run partner and made a Sat ritual out of trail running), went back to yoga and tried my hand at new fitness trends and experiences.

February 2013: I was a bit lost this month, I started dating again on eHarmony (which is a disaster), was working on my reading project of 50 books for the year, focusing on my career in advertising, staying in the gym and healthy but I had assigned the theme “make room” to this month. I was cleaning my closets and condo of things I no longer needed but I was having a hard time making room in my heart when I was holding onto so much hurt. I was telling guys on our second date my year story which I needed to do for me and still do but was closed off and hurt. I was letting my story define me vs. letting it be just a chapter in my life.

March 2013: I went on a transformation retreat to Mexico with my best friend Eva. She hosts a fitness retreat once a year for her fitness class participants so I went as a part of the family. During this retreat I finally acknowledged that I was hurt and was still trying to heal. I’m one of those Alpha Females who doesn’t want to stumble on grief for very long. This trip helped me refocus, introduced me to some amazing women and gave me new goals I didn’t even know I had. Off I went back to real life.

IMG_3560 My Run Happy Place

April 2013: Before even one month had passed I had achieved my new career goal that I had set in Mexico. If that’s not a testimony that will have people running to the retreat next year I don’t know what will. I have my dream job in marketing, working for an amazing tech/content company Kobo. They want to make the world a better place by reading. A jump from advertising to the client side. A job in marketing and a global marketing position. It was a testimony to stating a career goal out loud, visualizing it and then going out and making it happen. Oh and Kyla came to visit me for a week and I was in heaven having her in my life as my roomie. It was a simple week, nothing epic but friendship. She’s one of those people that just make a mark on you and it was so good to just laugh and spend time smiling. I also did my second O course in honour of my upcoming Tough Mudder goal and continued my journey towards becoming more bad ass.

May 2013: This month would mark the start of me going for and reaching new fitness goals. I ran my first 5K for the year, did my first tough mudder, began training hard for a fitness competition that I would compete in, in June and met my current boyfriend. Needless to say this was a busy month.

20130825-084554.jpg20130825-084613.jpg

June 2013: I decided despite all my goals that I would make a summer bucket list to make the most out of my summer. Summer of 2012 was busy with wedding planning that came crashing down around me so needless to say I was fueled to shape my 2013 summer to be one that I loved. I competed in the SAF Summer show in Ottawa, then ran in Color Me Rad the next day. I also learned how to let someone into my life even when I wasn’t expecting a relationship. I cancelled my eHarmony membership and thanked Facebook for being the matchmaker in this case.

20130825-084742.jpg20130825-084637.jpg

July 2013: I turned 31, completed #31actsoflove with my friends and family, tried SUPing for the first time, ran Warrior Dash with my ladies and went on Canoe Trip that fed my soul.

20130825-084625.jpg 20130825-084647.jpg 20130825-084707.jpg

August 2013: I ran my first half marathon, enjoyed an amazing cottage weekend, re-certified my Personal Trainer cert with Can Fit Pro and completed my third obstacle race of the year Mud Hero.

20130825-084728.jpg20130825-084655.jpg

So on this day, August 25th. The day that a year ago was supposed to be the “happiest” day of my life… I am exhausted, happy and of course slightly weepy. However, I am feeling fulfilled, loved and reflective. My blogs, quote hunting on Pinterest, Instagrams of me loving life and anything I post on my social networks has been for me first and foremost. I share things that make my happy and help me reflect on a life lived so far. Little did I know that when cancelling a wedding and beginning a year of healing that my journey could impact others. I’ve met and now received messages from women going through painful journeys of their own who have thanked me for sharing parts of mine. Women I didn’t even know read my blog or following me on social networks. So even though today is a reflection for me. I am posting it for others to see. I’m grateful for where I am today. Time does heal all wounds (just never say that to someone in the midst of grief). I’m still hurting. I don’t know if and or when I’ll ever stop. I’m still healing. But the key here is that I’m happy. I’m designing and living a life I love. For me. You can be selfish in what you do in your life while still being there for others. You can do things for your own health and happiness and still have fulfilling relationships. It’s a balance. And if I’ve learned anything in my 31 years it’s how to balance life and everything that throws itself at you.

Here’s to a year. Here’s to how far you can come in a year. Here’s to how different your life can be in a year.

BCBD Transformation Retreat 2013

3 / 11 / 135 / 3 / 19

I had the pleasure of joining the ladies of BCBD on the 2013 BCBD Transformation Retreat in Los Cabos Mexico. We arrived at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica late on Thursday night and the resort lobby smelled like eucalyptus and something else that I can’t put my finger on but it was divine.

Hotel Lobby

After a hiccup of our rooms being all king sized beds we finally settled in. I told Eva I was ok with spooning but we moved into a glorious 2 queen sized bed room.

Day 1 began at the crack of dawn. The resort looked spectacular at sunrise.

Pueblo Bonito

We headed down to the pool area which was to be our morning homebase for the time that we were there. Lay out of mats for guided meditation and took full advantage of the pool towels for warmth. The mornings were pretty cool. After a great start to day 1 we headed off to the restaurant for our first breakfast. First, let me start off by saying breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and the breakfasts in Mexico were divine. I had the same thing every day and it never got old. We’d sit down yell coffee to the waiter and then head off to the buffet. I’d order an egg white omelette and then fill a bowl with granola, plain yogurt and papaya & grapefruit. The omelette plate would then get sausage and hash browns! I posted the below picture on my Instagram. My breakfast is on the right and my dinner from Day 1 is on the left. Sea bass, prawns and veggies!

Food

But back to day 1 morning. I changed out of short shorts and put on pink capris for the first bootcamp on the beach! Eva put us through our paces and we finished the bodyweight workout with 5 runs up and down to the water. See top right picture. Eva yelled hands up and I obliged. We were sweating out of breath, a tad sunburnt but happy.

Day 1

That afternoon we started our group hang out time by making vision boards for our binders.

Retreat Binder

To wrap up day 1 we headed off that evening just before sunset for our beach run. The private beach was amazing. Our route was 4k every day and the sand was so soft you’d sink a full step into the sand so I announced the first day it was really 8k 🙂 Yes I multiplied by 2.

Day 1 Run

Some of my favourite memories from the trip was starting the day every morning with guided meditation and yoga. Day 2 I was set up in front of Erin and we almost made out in upward dog.

Upward Dog Kiss

Day 3 I had the pleasure of teaching bootcamp! I was so grateful that Eva asked me to teach one day so I decided Tabatas were in order. We started with a dancers warmup and then went into 8 rounds of tabata. A tabata is 20s of work and 10s of rest repeated 8 times.

Warm Up

I put them through their paces of burpees, mountain climbers, crawl outs, bear walk (or pendulum swing), plank jacks, jump squats, v ups and frog jumps. We finished in 40 mins and I was wrecked. Doing the exercises and talking the ladies through motivations was hard work. Eva took us through a cool down and we ran to lunch for more fuel!

Another favourite part of the trip was our beach runs. I ran 6 out of the 7 days there! Here is my favourite pics from the runs. My happy place, my run buddies (my fav run moment was running with Eva, Katie and Erin beside me) I usually ran on my own so the one night we ran together made me so happy! I took a great picture of Caitlyn & Lisa running together and then Eva grabbed a shot of me running on our last morning in Cabo!

Another amazing highlight was the photo shoot Eva facilitated for the girls. We got amazing shots including personal photos and yoga shots on the beach! It was such a fun experience to share with these ladies!

Thank you Cabo for an amazing time!

We came, we saw, we beat up our yoga mats and we left.

Dear MS, I kind of forgot you existed. It’s been Dear MS,
I kind of forgot you existed.
It’s been 9 years since you showed up in my life, 4 years since I’ve experienced symptoms and I am now having my first relapse since my diagnosis. I heard you. I’m well aware you’re still around. But you’re not really my main squeeze. You’re like an ex that you think about once in a blue moon. Reminding me of all the ways I didn’t take care of myself like I can & do today.
You brought me to my knees this morning in tears. The result of reading MRI results at 6 am.
I’ve let myself grieve the results of the new lesions on my spine today. I’ve cried, stared into space and I’ve let myself worry. I’ve run through all the worst-case scenarios and asked Mike to provide me calming validation I would have support in case they were to ever happen because my monkey brain needs it. So tonight, I’ll run an Epsom salt bath with essential oils. I’ll plug in my phone away from our bedroom and I’ll curl up with a book and turn off the lights before 9pm.

And tomorrow I’ll go into research mode. There is so much to learn about EBV in my B cells and how it may be reactivated and causing this flare. I read the research when it came out but I didn’t really pay attention. I consulted a naturopath who gave me a few tinctures that I never ended up finishing.

Despite the tears and the worry. I KNOW deep down I’m going to be ok. I KNOW I will be fine. I KNOW I can take care of myself in a holistic way so that this doesn’t happen again. I have that much FAITH in my ability to heal myself. And with a healthcare team, I’ll get to the bottom of it.

There are so many things I’m trying to heal right now. Its truly overwhelming at times… from
- Liver Support
- Iron Overload
- EBV & B Cell Research
- Reduce Inflammation
- Shed PostPartum Weight
- Heal Pelvic Floor Prolapse
- Heal Bruised Rib
- Heal Sinus Cold

I know that I have to focus on baby steps and do one thing at a time to bring back my vitality.

I just needed to list all of the things I’m tackling so they don’t reside on a to-do list just in my brain. Ok plugging in my phone and am off to start my delicious evening routine so I can approach tomorrow feeling fresh.
One day he won’t want to cuddle with me so I’m One day he won’t want to cuddle with me so I’m soaking it in and capturing the memory
