2018 Ride to Conquer Cancer

6 / 11 / 186 / 20 / 19

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank those that generously donated to the fundraising event I participated in this past weekend!

This was my second year tackling the Ride to Conquer Cancer and my first year completing the entire ride course! Last year due to the heat my body wasn’t doing well after day one so I was dropped off at the lunch spot on day 2 and only completed half of day 2. This year I tackled the full 106 kms on day 1 and 116 kms on day 2!

This year the ride raised $18.3 Million for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto

We ride with the Detour Gold team. Mike’s mom used to ride for the company and have been supporting the ride for 8 years! This is Mike’s 8th year riding and he has a goal of raising $1M for PMH. We’re so close and believe we can do it next year!

This year we raised $141K which is an amazing feat and I’m really proud to ride with these guys. Last year was a complete blur and I remember meeting a few of the riders along the way and at a dinner, the company hosts for us on Saturday night but this year it was nice to remember a few faces and chat here and there along the ride or at pit stops. 2 of our riders are cancer survivors and haven’t been very open about talking about it. They had a chance at dinner and there was definitely tears in everyone’s eyes talking about what it means to them to do the ride and I’m blessed to see how they are tackling this disease.

If you’re curious about doing the ride it’s an amazing event. From amazing pit stops, with hydration stations, ample snacks and food, medical tents and bike techs along the way, it’s so well executed!

The only frustrating thing that happens is bottlenecks along the way. From leaving Toronto on Day 1, to leaving Hamilton on Day 2. But if you stop and get off your bike you can have a genuine conversation with a human beside you. You’ll have lots of time on your bike. Don’t worry!

Mike and I rode Day 2 together which made me super happy. Him not so much. Only because he got jammed up in the bottleneck and a rider hit his Achilles from behind. So he was in a lot of pain for the entire ride. His parents were waiting for us in the sun and snapped a shot as we funneled through the finish line just as we were dismounting!

Have you done a long fundraising ride like this before?

Curious to tackle one next year?

Ride to Conquer Cancer 2017 Recap

6 / 14 / 176 / 14 / 17

We did it! We Conquered the Ride to Conquer Cancer 2017!

When I signed up last year to join my boyfriend Mike, and his family I was a little hesitant about how the weekend would go. Other than being utterly and completely exhausted it was also awe-inspiring, a confidence booster and just amazing to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. The scenery biking from Toronto to Niagara Falls was kind of gorgeous on the back roads!

We drove into Toronto late Friday night after work and basically got our bikes and bags ready for the ride. Tried on bike gear ordered for us by our team and jumped into bed for as much sleep as possible.

Thankfully, Mike’s parents have a condo right beside the start line so we just wandered over in the morning with our overnight bag and bikes. If I were to do anything differently it would’ve been to bring a backpack vs a shoulder bag so I could’ve actually ridden my bike to the start line.

We rode with Mike’s mom’s former company team so that’s why we have Detour Gold all over our bodies. We lined up close to the start line and were amongst the first ones to leave the really crazy corral of bikers walking their bikes to the start line and then trying to get on them as we left the starting line. I loved heading down Lakeshore to start as the road was super smooth and easy to ride. When we got to Mississauga the road’s got a little worse for wear and my seat was not having fun navigating the bumps.

The first day’s ride is from Toronto to Hamilton. I was actually really excited to be back in the Hammer and actually ride onto McMaster’s campus as I hadn’t seen the place in a while. I definitely got all nostalgic seeing my old residence and Business School.

Things I learned on the ride:

  • I finally figured out all my gears after 10 kms and was feeling confident on downhills and uphills. No more crying on downhills which was my reaction when I got on my bike for the first time in 2015. I also finally got comfortable with speed and didn’t have to put my brakes on, on hills. When I did the MS Ride in 2016 I was still a little scared.
  • While I managed to complete the little over 100 kms on day 1 I wasn’t doing ok body wise. The right side of my body had gone numb due to the heat. Of course it was a heat wave that weekend. I was beyond exhausted, wasn’t able to think straight and was a little scared for what Day 2 was going to bring. After a shower, lots of food, Breathe Essential Oil on my chest, a couple of Advil later and sleep I was feeling much better.
  • I really, really loved the Gu Waffles I had purchased for fuel. I got the Salted Chocolate ones as they were not only gluten free but easy to tuck into my jersey back pockets. I’m a little sad that when I had gone to Bushtakah to find Endurance Tap (my favourite endurance fuel) but they were all sold out. Next year I’ll remember to stock up ahead of time.
  • My liquid nutrition included a bottle of Beet Elite for the first 10 kms, then Nuun the rest of the ride. I really love my Skratch Labs electrolyte mix but didn’t want to carry extra baggies with me.

Day 2, Mike’s mom told me that we were going to get dropped off at the lunch spot which basically cut 50 kms off our day. This meant I cried silently in frustrated that no one thought I could do the entire day. Quick, mindset switch later and I know my new family just didn’t want to see me in the state I was in yesterday.

It was the best decision I could have made. I still rode 64 km the second day but with very minimal MS symptoms and a smile on my face at the finish line. There was considerably less hills as well but a strong head wind so still got some great resistance training in.

I may have already signed up for next year!

My only ask if you’ve read to the bottom of this post is to help me hit my fundraising goal. I wasn’t able to complete it before the ride and I have until the end of July to complete it.

Would you consider donating?

Perusing the local Facebook Mom's Groups I was sho Perusing the local Facebook Mom's Groups I was shocked to hear how many moms are on anti-depressants.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I do not know their situations. I do not know the depth of their mental health issues. And I won't pretend to. But I do know my own. I do know I gave birth during a pandemic. I do know I experienced isolation and stress. I do know that I was diagnosed with PTSD from birth trauma. I do know that I had postpartum depression and anxiety. I do know that I pictured walking out of our front door and never coming home. I do know that I pictured what my husband and kid's lives would be like without me in it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I know the pain and I KNOW it took an army of holistic solutions to pull me out of the depths of that depression. It wasn't one thing. It was everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was the group talk therapy I went to weekly. It was focusing on getting a full 8 hours of sleep. It was morning meditation instead of IG scrolling. It was somatic breathwork. It was leaning on my husband and family for support. It was hiring a nanny. It was ensuring I spend time daily in self-care. It was asking for help.

Here if you want to talk or figuring how to incorporate different things into your life to support you.

However, I do value having vehicles with a high resell value so it makes it easier to buy new vehicles every few years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also added travel to this values statement because I want a life of variety and I want to gift that to our kids so I thought it would be fun to focus on different methods of transportation as we plan trips over the coming years with them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I thought I’d share this now as we started shopping for a new large SUV that can fit both kids, both dogs and bags for road trips to the cottage and North Bay.
Here is how we value our family.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My favourite part of this statement is our "we grow relationships individually within the family" and this is why once a month we book a mommy/daughter | daddy/son date and then a mommy/son date | daddy/daughter date!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ps. This is a monthly Asana task for me at the beginning of the month to book into our calendars so we make it happen.

I want to get to a point where I’m working out midday. And I’d like to get down to a 3-4 day work week.
