Last week I met my friend Michelle Clark after work to get her baby Kombucha scoby (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) from her so I could start my own Kombucha batch. Kombucha is a fermented tea drink that is believed to help digestion and gut health.
Michelle gave me her baby Scoby in a bit of Kombucha liquid in a mason jar. My friend, Google helped me figure out how to make Kombucha from the baby scoby. I found several sites that gave me the same steps that I’ve written out below for you.
How To Make Homemade Kombucha
Step 1: Boil Water. I used 3 Mason Jars of Water. After it comes to a boil add sugar. I used 2 cups.
Step 2: Add 2 tea bags. I used Lipton White Raspberry Tea. I removed from heat and filled my sink with cold water and placed the pot in the sink to cool.
Step 3: I poured the starter liquid from my baby Scoby jar that I got from Michelle equally into 3 mason jars.
Step 4: I poured the tea equally into all three jars and placed a baby Scoby (it was divided into 3 on top of the liquid).
Step 5: I covered the jars with paper towels & elastic bands and placed them under a cupboard at the back of my kitchen.
After 5 days I taste-tested them in the morning and they are still a bit sweet and tart. I think I’ll ferment over the weekend and taste test again Sunday night.
Do you make your own kombucha? Any tips?
