2017 Year In Review

12 / 29 / 177 / 4 / 22

As I’ve done for the past few years, I love looking back on my year and see how I did on the goals I set on January first of the year before. I set out to achieve goals based on how I want to feel and it’s made goal accomplishment and planning more fun and allowed me to accomplish things with more ease.

So how did the year go?

Career – Lit Up: In 2017, I wanted to feel lit up in my career. I decided to double down and focus on my podcast and building my dōTERRA business. While I still work full-time in the corporate world I hardly talk about it. I was in a good job when I first moved back to Ottawa as a Regional Marketing Manager for an accounting firm but I wasn’t challenged. I learned an immense amount of new management skills and how to collaborate with remote employees and co-workers but desperately needed a change. In 2017, I reached a new rank level in my dōTERRA business as a Silver Leader, the Alpha Female Podcast reached 100 episodes and in November I was headhunted and started a new job as eCommerce Merchandising Manager at Corel. I’m really excited about the products that I’m in charge of selling online for Corel. I get to serve creatives and I love my new team, how smart they are and the vibe in the office, in general, is fantastic. I’m really excited about what the new year will bring! Stay tuned for my goal-setting post for 2018 and where I’m going to take things next year.

Home – Ease: As we create a home from a house I wanted to do so with Ease. I didn’t want to stress out with renovations or setting it up or decorating. We completed almost a full home renovation from January – April in 2017, minus the bathrooms, and it turned out so well! From a complete kitchen renovation to new floors, to new inside doors (including closet doors), to a new upper floor ceiling and insulation fixed structural work in the house. I finally set up my home office, which I’ve been talking about for the past few years, and even started decorating. Mike finished my new desk for me and I’m so excited to finish the setup in 2018. We’ve barely begun decorating and that’s ok. I really like how purposeful we are in decorating. We find things that mean something to both of us and then set it up.

Financial – Brave: My dad sat down in December of 2016 and he showed me how to invest in several equity investments. We were able to grow the investment by 10% which I’m pretty stoked about because my Dad estimated a 7% growth each year. I had set a goal for monthly review to monitor growth and optimize as appropriate but I didn’t even touch my investment account once all year. I think the desired feeling of brave wasn’t really appropriate as I am confident in my beginner investment knowledge but I need to decide on a commitment to consistency in monitoring and continued education around investing. Figuring out a new core desired feeling for this category in the new year to stay more aligned.

Health, Nutrition & Fitness – Vital: I struggled in this department this year. I’ve really lost my mojo around working out. From a health and nutrition standpoint my vitality is great but with my fitness or movement routine suffering this year I’ve put on a bit of weight and my energy has significantly reduced. I know what I need to do to build a routine that supports me, that I love and will bring me back to a standard of fitness that I thrive in. So I’m not going to be hard on myself or lament about excuses. It’s just time to rebuild.

Races – Brave: I wanted to compete in 4 OCRs and 3 Trail Races in 2017. I ended up only racing in 2 Trail Races as I solidified a partnership with Camp Yoga and ended up teaching essential oil workshops at 5 of the Camps this year. I had already signed up for all races which fell on the same weekends as the camps so I had to forfeit my registration for all 4 OCRs and 1 of the Trail Races. This was a little disappointing but at the same time my training has been almost non-existent so I feel more confident going into 2018 with proper planning of business ventures and races and creating a training plan that really supports my return to racing.

Travel – Inspired: My travel this year was beautiful. I had the most amazing trip to Mallorca (Part 1 & Part 2) in May with my bestie, Kyla. What I loved about this trip is we paired adventure (exploring the Island) and rest and relaxation with the yoga retreat portion of the trip!

Cala des Moro
Kyla and Robyn

Later in the year, Mike and I also returned to Alberta and tacked on a BC adventure. We got engaged at the top of a mountain, hiked some amazing trails and spent time relaxing in Air BnBs and trying out new restaurants. It was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation again. Can you sense a theme for how I like to travel?

Writing & Reading – Inspired: My writing has stayed consistent this year. I’ve been publishing one or two blog posts a week and I have to feel inspired by the post to press publish. There are many weeks that I schedule a topic but don’t feel inspired to write it. When I press delete on the editorial calendar it feels good so I’ll continue this way. I like the cadence of publishing 1 – 2x a week in addition to the show notes for the podcast so this feels good and inspired.

While I haven’t read as much as I’d like this year the books I have devoured have been incredible. I’ve been so busy I’ve been fully slacking on book review posts for some as well! I’ve got a bunch on the go so I’m going to double down at the beginning of 2018 and get them off my “currently reading” list.

The Slight Edge

The Untethered Soul & Surrender Experiment

The Dark Side of Light Chasers

Spiritual – Connected: I set a goal of starting a morning meditation practice and I love what I’ve created. I get up in the morning and either pour myself a glass of warm lemon water or my coffee and head into my home office, plop down on the meditation cushion I purchased on Kijiji and flip on Insight Timer. I have it set to 5 minutes and use the OM chant as background noise as there is usually something else going on in the house and need to unfocus on what’s going on around me.

From the daily devotional perspective, it still didn’t stick. I have said over the past few years that if I don’t have it on my night table then I won’t pick it up. This year I kept my 5-minute journal on my night table and was so much more successful incorporating it into my daily practice. I really do need visual cues for repetitive daily routine creation.

Relationships – Love: So friendship wise I talked about missing my Toronto friends. I talked about how awkward it’s been trying to make adult friends in Ottawa and I’ve still struggled with this until recently. My new adult friend Erin, recently reached out to me after finding my blog and asked to get together in person. I suggested dinner at Pure Kitchen after a yoga date and then making dinner with her hubby and my fiance and pups I’m excited to invest time in getting to know her better this year. I’ve reached out to another local yoga teacher to go for tea before her Friday classes and the conversation and just her presence was amazing. I’m excited about connection in 2018 and investing in beautiful female relationships.

I also talked about how I loved hiking last year in my goals post and how I wanted to start an activity club on Facebook. My friend Brit and I started “The Trekking Tribe” – we have over 219 female locals to Ottawa members but every time I suggested a hike there was always minimal interest and barely any turnout. So I’m just going to focus on my own hiking or trail running activities, I’ll still post in the group but I don’t have high hopes for finding my tribe there. It just doesn’t seem to be a priority for most.

Romantically, I wrote last year about loving Mike and focusing on date nights. We had so much fun tackling escape rooms together, going out to the movies and even started hanging out with more couples and doing double date nights out at restaurants or making food at each other’s homes. This meant the world to me and Mike and I joke that although we are incredibly devoted introverts it’s really nice to socialize every now and again.

Here’s to taking what served me well into 2018 and building on the beautiful goal setting with soul that has meant the world to me over the past few years.

Stay tuned for my 2018 Goals Post on January 1st.

2017 Goals

1 / 2 / 175 / 3 / 19

For the past two years I’ve used Core Desired Feelings from The Desire Map by Danielle Laporte to be my guide as I goal set for the upcoming year. For my 2017 goals I’m still using my CDF’s of wanting to feel Vital, Brave, Inspired, Ease & Love as my guides. In 2016, I also felt really drawn to the word Lit Up when it comes to my side passions and hustles.

However, this year I wanted to get a little creative before setting SMART goals. So I went back to my homegirl Danielle Laporte and used two of her creative pieces (see bottom of the post), in addition to my business mentor Ange Peter’s HOL:FIT Manifesto to create my own Manifesto for the upcoming year. I love that this will be a Manifesto I can modify as I evolve and grow. It’s purpose? Inspiration to remember my values as I dream and go for the stars.

So before we dive into my 2017 goals I give you the…

I’ve decided to call it the Alpha Wellness Manifesto as an extension of my Alpha Female personal brand. Since one of the definitions of alpha is: denoting a person who has a dominant role or position within a particular sphere. I think it’s fitting because Alpha’s have a dominant role in their wellness. Here’s to a year of being well in all aspects of our lives and really owning our health.

Without further ado, my 2017 goals:

Career – Lit Up: I stuck my hands in multiple projects, outside of my full time job in 2016. In 2017, I’m going to double down and focus on two. My Alpha Female podcast lights me up. I have a really good routine of scheduling & recording interviews and have an amazing team that help me with editing and producing the show. My goal in 2016 is to continue to provide a valuable weekly show that inspires the listeners to be proactive with their health.

My second focus of the year will be to grow my dōTERRA business. I’m beyond blessed with how the oils have helped me reduce stress and anxiety, make my house & office smell amazing and assist me in supporting my health in so many areas of my life in addition to financial abundance. I can’t wait to share the oils with more people this year and grow the business side by really focusing on how I can mentor the women on my team who have decided to dive in with both feet and are building the business with me. It is going to be a year that blesses us with self-development, optimized health and thriving abundance. If you are drawn to know more you can check out my Getting Started Guide HERE. I chose lit up as my core desired feeling cause nothing lights me up more than when someone who has listened to the podcast or receives their first order of oils takes the time to send me a message and let me know how it’s impacted their life in such a positive way. And that lights me up!

Home – Ease: I moved in with Mike in April of 2016. He had purchased our home before we met with the intention of growing into it. It’s an older home with amazing space and we can’t wait to invest in it’s value and improve our lives with some updates. We are starting a massive renovation of our home in January. We are going to attempt a full kitchen renovation while also updating all the hardware flooring in the house from parquet to laminate (because dogs). The picture below is one of the inspiration images on our Dream Kitchen Pinterest board. We are in love with the idea of white uppers and slate grey bottom cabinets.

I also can’t wait to fully set up my home office. Mike is building me a desk so that’ll be moved in once the flooring is complete. I also need to paint the walls and install shelving. The beginning of the year will be chaotic at home but we’re ready to make our house more our home. I chose ease because the only way my anxiety is going to survive a renovation is to ensure I see it as a process filled with ease.

Financial – Brave: My father taught me a little bit more about investing in 2016 outside of my general RRSP & TFSA knowledge. My goal this year is to map out a plan for consistent investments in stocks, bonds and ETFs. I’ve set up appointments for myself once a month to monitor growth, adjust investments and continue to educate myself and learn as I go. I chose brave because I’ve never really felt confident in the investment world and want to ensure after a year of investing I feel brave with my choices but also confident.

Health – Vital: When it comes to my health & fitness I want to feel vital. To achieve this I know I need to be consistent with my supplementation and self-care. I haven’t been diligent with supplement compliance or daily health habits this year and I’ve noticed a huge difference in my energy. My goal every year is to not have any new lesions on my MS MRI scans. I now have a goal of regulating my hormones.

1. Revamp my morning routine (I’ll share more in a new blog post in the future).

2. Take my daily supplements in the morning, at 11am and at 9pm before bed. I need to figure out a better place for them in my life so I’m visually cued to take them. More to come on how I figured out a better compliance routine.

3. Research how to regulate my hormones and find health care team members to help me live well with PCOS.

Fitness – Vital: I want to be consistent in workouts and movement work. I like being in the gym 3x a week and want to get 1 – 2 runs in a week. I have made a promise to myself to do mobility work every time I work out. Carving out 15 – 20 mins a workout is realistic for me to stick to.

Races – Brave: I would like to complete 4 OCRs and 3 Trail Races this year. I have Xman Toronto, Montreal, Sherbrooke and the Northman Laurentides on the roster. I’m also excited that MEC has a race series in Ottawa and I’ve chosen to tackle the 5K, then 11K then my first trail Half Marathon. I would love to compete in OCRWC this year so if my body can cooperate with my training plan I hope to qualify at an Xman race and be there in October. I chose brave as my core desired feeling because racing is always about developing a little bit more confidence in my abilities each time I run.

Nutrition – Vital: I feel like I’m doing really well in the nutrition category. Auto-Immune paleo protocol is really working for how I nourish my body. I love how I feel energy wise. I’ve been able to heal my gut an no longer have IBS symptoms. My goal with my nutrition now is to continue to optimize it with small tweaks and to always bring in variety. My goal this year is to try 1 new recipe a week in my AIP meal planning so Mike and I never get bored with our meals.

Travel – Inspired: I have 2 personal trips and 3 business trips planned for 2017. My girlfriend Kyla and I are going to Mallorca, Spain for a yoga retreat this spring and Mike and I will be heading back to Alberta for Camp Yoga and more mountain adventures. To grow my dōTERRA business I have 3 trips planned this year. I’m working on achieving the rank of Silver by January 31st. If I can achieve this goal then I will be attending the Leadership Retreat at the beginning of March, Convention in September and I’ve committed to going to Go Pro in November! I chose inspired as my core desired feeling because Mallorca will be new to be and I can’t wait to absorb all the sights and sounds and get grounded in the Spring at the yoga retreat. My experience in the Rockies last year taught me I can be knocked off my feet in wonder by the mountains and I can’t wait to see more mountain views that take my breath away and cause me to say Holy Hannah!

Writing – Inspired: No big goals in this category, this year like I tackled last year. I will continue to blog 3x a week. I’ve gotten into a consistent schedule of writing 2 blog posts a week and then on Friday the show notes for the Alpha Female Podcast episode go up. I love this part of my life so I’m excited to see what blog posts I dream up this year. I chose inspired because I want to really have fun with my blogs this year and have each post feel inspiring or inspire me in some way.

Reading – Inspired: I want to read 1 – 2 chapters a night before going to bed. I have a few books on the go but I’m committing to reading The Surrender Experiment first. I chose inspired for this category as well because each book choice I want to inspire some new way of thinking in my life.

Some of the others on my to-read list are:

Robyn’s 2017 Books

The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living
The Dark Side of the Light Chasers: Reclaiming Your Power, Creativity, Brilliance and Dreams
The School of Greatness: A Real-World Guide to Living Bigger, Loving Deeper, and Leaving a Legacy
The Book of SHE: Your Heroine's Journey into the Heart of Feminine Power
The Way of the Happy Woman: Living the Best Year of Your Life
Darling, You Can't Do Both
Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness
The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond YourselfThe Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life's Perfection

Spiritual – Connected: I would like to create a morning meditation practice (my intention is to create a meditation space in my home office) and I would like to get back into the habit of reading my daily devotional before bed. I just need to put it on top of the nightstand to visually cue me. If I’m making a habit of reading a few chapters a night from a book I’m hoping that reading a one page devotional won’t be that hard to remember if I make a commitment to it. I chose a new desired feeling for spiritual that isn’t in my core list. I have a strong faith that I don’t necessarily blog about but I want to feel connected and rooted in my faith as I spend daily purposeful time with God.

Relationships – Love: Friendship wise I really miss my Toronto friends. Now that I’ve moved to Ottawa I’m focused on creating a tribe. I’ve been blessed to find amazing new friendships here and I continue to reach out to women who I meet who have amazing energy and I’m just flat out asking them in my awkward fashion “Will you be my adult friend?” I suppose I could leave out the adult part but I find it kinda funny. What is filling my heart is finding women to go to yoga with and to hike with. I’ve talked about hiking with my friend Jamie and we keep adding to the tribe. I used to be a part of a Facebook group called Activity Exchange in Toronto and have missed meeting up with friends for trail runs or hikes. I have to stop talking about missing it and just create one here in Ottawa!

On the romance side, my “goal” is simply to love Mike. To make this a smart goal we talked about ensuring that we plan 2 date nights a month so we aren’t simply passing in the house or seeing each other at the gym. With the gym, he opens one week and then closes the next so when he’s on mornings he has evenings off. We love going to escape rooms or curling up for a movie so we need to consciously schedule these to make them happen outside of all the activity bucket list ideas I dream up for us to do. If I don’t schedule it this workaholic will spend all her free time in my side passions like podcast and dōTERRA building.

I continue to choose Love for this category because the more I give love the more I receive and it means so much to me to feel connected with friends, family and Mike by simply continuing to make love the priority.

I’m so excited for 2017! What are you tackling in 2017 that you can’t wait to feel amazing about!?
