My self-help book discovery journey was all over the place. The moment I’ve landed today is amazing but it took me a while to discover the right authors and messages I needed in my life.
One of my goals for the year was to find a happy and healthy relationship so I thought I’d look into the dating self-help realm first. I clearly haven’t been doing the right things in my dating life so I started there.
I first read 5 Love Languages, It’s Just A F***ing Date, and then 30-Day Love Detox.
The first book taught me how to learn how to speak someone’s love language. It was so simple and beautiful in concept. You learn to speak in your partner’s love language and their love tank will always be full. This book is applicable to any relationship at any stage so I’m grateful I read this one but will definitely revisit the concept with a future partner.
I should’ve waited to read 30 Day Love Detox until I’d read a few more self-development books and truly accepted that I was in a better place to date. I didn’t truly put this book into practice until recently. So although I read it I wasn’t ready to accept what it was telling me.
After I decided to jump into the self-development book world I realized I should have started with a couple of basics first before jumping into dating books.
I would recommend reading You Are A BadAss first as it distills a ton of self-help books into one. Then dive into Add More Ing To Your Life (A Hip Guide to Happiness) by Gabby Bernstein. This is one of her earlier books and therefore a great start into the Spirit Junkie world she’s created. The next two books in terms of the order are really a toss-up. I read The Power of Now first but wasn’t fully ready to receive the message. I would probably recommend reading May Cause MIracles first as it’s a tactical day-by-day guide that includes meditations & journaling exercises.
Right now I’m reading Fire Starter Sessions, The Desire Map & Miracles Now at the moment. Yes, I’m flipping between three at the moment. Book reviews to come! In my library ready to go: A Year of Miracles, The Tapping Solution, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers & The Dance of Anger
All the “Love Languages” books are great I think. I would recommend a great read on self esteem and empowerment for women, Bermesola Dyer’s Getting Past the Ugly. bermesolamdyer.com is her site. Great tips in her book on daily things we can do to keep our esteem high and how we view ourselves builds off that.
