Educating Myself Around All Things Crypto: Bitcoin

4 / 6 / 224 / 12 / 22

Halfway through 2021, I decided that it was HIGH time I educate myself on all things cryptocurrency. I’m glad that I didn’t live completely under a rock. And that I should OBVIOUSLY start by learning all about Bitcoin (BTC). I feel like I have the basic first principle understandings however, there is still so much for me to learn.

So I’m organizing my learning here so I can easily share with others as I help orange pill them 🙂

As always, I’m a massive fan of definitions so let’s start with that. And finally, I’ll share the resources that I used or am using to educate myself.

What is Bitcoin?

When I decided to start learning about Bitcoin I started by searching for “the definition of bitcoin”. Here’s what’ popped up:

Bitcoin Definition

From there I went a little further and clicked on the top-ranked Bitcoin Definition by Investopedia.

They start by stating that BTC is a decentralized digital currency. It follows the ideas set out in the white paper by the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto. Which I highly recommend reading after you have grasped the concept of BTC. They continue on to explain…

Bitcoin is known as a type of cryptocurrency because it uses cryptography to keep it secure. There are no physical bitcoins, only balances kept on a public ledger that everyone has transparent access to (although each record is encrypted). All Bitcoin transactions are verified by a massive amount of computing power via a process known as “mining.” Bitcoin is not issued or backed by any banks or governments, nor is an individual bitcoin valuable as a commodity.

Diving Further Into The Technology

Here is a great list of FAQs. I started asking around with friends who had already invested in cryptocurrency and received several resource suggestions. One of them is Anthony Pompliano’s podcast. While listening to several episodes I found out about his crypto course. The course aims to help 10,000 people find jobs in the crypto industry. I enrolled to learn more. In our very first workshop we dove into the concept of money to truly understand BTC.

We learned about the 3 functions of money. Which include store of value to a medium of exchange to unit of account. And the 6 properties of money which include scarcity, durability, acceptability, portability, divisibility and fungibility. I clearly didn’t paying attention to these concepts in economics during my University days. My next step will be to explain to a 5 year old the functions and properties of money as it relates to Bitcoin to see if I really understand it.

What is Blockchain Technology?

Blockchain technology isn’t actually included in the main definition of Bitcoin. However, Bitcoin doesn’t exist without the technology.

Blockchain Definition

This was a really important concept for me to grasp to understand the security of Bitcoin. When you dive into learning how all the players in the decentralized network support the cryptocurrency the technology makes even more sense.

Why Would Someone Invest In Bitcoin?

So why would someone invest in bitcoin, since many investors deem it a risky investment? The risk in investing in Bitcoin is because the price of Bitcoin is quite volatile. The historical performance (compound annual growth rate) is actually higher than Amazon, Apple, Visa and Microsoft. Unfortunately because it’s measured in fiat currency equivalents we see volatility in price.

Investment or Long-Term

Many treat Bitcoin as short-term investment. Once you understand it’s potential for reliable, long-term store of value you’ll then come to understand why many investors using dollar-cost averaging to invest. Many will hold their assets long-term (otherwise known as hodling). Whether it’s an investment to imagine the future potential or to realize short-term gains there are several reasons why someone would invest in Bitcoin.

Educating Myself Around All Things Crypto: Web3

3 / 28 / 223 / 28 / 22

I decided halfway through 2021 that it was time to educate myself about all things cryptocurrency. And while I knew I needed to learn about bitcoin and altcoins, I had no clue I’d be diving into the world of decentralization and web3 at the same time.

So let’s start with definitions and the resources I’m using to educate myself around the topic in case you’re interested in diving into this rabbit hole with me.

What is Web3?

Web3 also known as Web 3.0 or web3 is the world wide web based on blockchain technology according to Wikipedia. If Web 2.0 provided us with internet access through centralized companies Web 3.0 will bring about decentralization, data security and privacy for its users.

Web3 is an internet that is open for all users, built on open protocols and transparent blockchain networks.

Mason Nystrom – What Is Web3?

Ok, but what does that really mean? How is it different from the internet that I use today filled with Google searches through my Chrome browser, hosting the million and one photos I take of my children on DropBox or blogging on this website for the past 13 years! Egad!

How Is It Different?

To better understand the concept of Web 3.0 it was helpful for me to understand how I currently don’t really own this website. I bought the URL domain through GoDaddy and host the website through HostGator on a WordPress platform so at the end of the day if I stop paying the bills I lose the website.

The vocabulary around Web3, like that of many early movements, is very idealistic. It’s all about using technology to create trustless systems, wrest power from corporations, and give it back to the people.

Packy McCormick – The Value Chain of the Open Metaverse

According to the author Packy McCormick, people passionate about Web3 will tell you what Web3 is against but they don’t always do a great job of explaining what it’s for or how it can be used or how it can help you. He also goes on to explain that at the heart of the concept of Web3 is cutting out the middlemen. That Web3 will bring about change that will empower the financial exchange of value between the consumer and the creator directly. However, we are in a period of transition where the interfaces are often hard to use and somewhat intimidating.

Web3 is very early and many don’t believe it will deliver on its promise. The interfaces of decentralized apps are still hard to decipher for most people, myself included.

So How Can We Use Web3 Now?

The first company that crossed my path that opened my eyes to Web3 was Unstoppable Domains. Is this my solution to never having to pay GoDaddy another cent? (Sorry GoDaddy, nothing against you…)

Web2 and Web3 Companies

I’ve been paying GoDaddy for years for domains like robynbaldwin.com but I can now purchase an NFT domain with Unstoppable Domains once and own it forever. Never having to pay a fee annually to the URL domain gods. And while Unstoppable Domains outlines 5 reasons why you need an NFT domain, the only thing they still lack is a way for you to use the domain easily for your current website in the Web 2.0 world that we still exist in. So while I’ve purchased an NFT domain for seamless crypto payments I won’t be transitioning my blog over to the domain anytime soon.

I would highly recommend diving further into this article if you’d like to understand the different use cases. It’s an exciting time to know that we’re just at the beginning of the shift from Web2 to Web3 and I’ll be watching how the infrastructure develops for ease of use in the future.

I loved the heck out of July! What’s something you I loved the heck out of July! What’s something you did this month that created a core memory?!?

We’re obsessed with seasonal bucket lists over here. We created a fun list this summer and have knocked off most of the items already. Just a few more for August!

Do you have a summer bucket list??

I’ve started doing co-working sessions with my wedding planner @laurs.sinclair & wedding photographer @iam.stephaniemason. They are luckily best friends and 8 years later adopting me into their friend circle which is giving me life in the friendship department!

In the summer, for our monthly date night we send the twins to my parents for a sleepover and go golfing together! We’ve been trying out courses close to home so we can race home to our puppy and eat a lazy dinner together!

What’s your favourite course in the west end of Ottawa?

The epic yes day continues! We started this tradition on our twins birthday last year and did it again.

This year we had breakfast pizza, went rock climbing, ate cotton candy, Mac and Cheese, Banaba Pudding, went mini putting and had Boston Pizza for dinner!

Everyone was exhausted and had hurting tummies!

Follow @robynpineault for more twin mom life adventures!
Happy 6th Birthday Pineault Twins!! It’s our seco Happy 6th Birthday Pineault Twins!!

It’s our second annual tradition of doing a yes day for their birthday. They get to choose the food and one activity each that we do as a family! Here’s the recap!

Rock Climbing @altitudegym
Mac & Cheese @churchillswestboro
Cotton Candy
Banana Pudding @happyrollsdessertbar
Mini Putt @puttingedge
Pizza @bphuntclub

Passed out from the sugar crash!

Overheard the next morning: Next year I’m only choosing one treat so my tummy doesn’t hurt.

We eat very healthy but we want them to know what “fun” things taste like but now they understand why we don’t normally eat alllllll the treats!

My parents taught me to work hard, but along the way, I sought their acceptance in my grades, not just because I am.

That took me years to unpack.
