Book Review: Anatomy of the Spirit

9 / 20 / 215 / 12 / 22

Synopsis on Kobo.com

Building on wisdom from Hindu, Christian, and Kaballah traditions, this comprehensive guide to energy healing reveals the hidden stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that cause illness.

Anatomy of the Spirit is the boldest presentation of energy medicine to date, written by one of its premier practitioners, internationally acclaimed medical intuitive Caroline Myss, who is amongst the “hottest new voices in the alternative health/spirituality scene” (Publishers Weekly). Based on fifteen years of research into energy medicine, Dr. Myss’s work shows how every illness corresponds to a pattern of emotional and psychological stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that have influenced corresponding areas of the human body.

Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss’s breakthrough model of the body’s seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions-the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life-to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. With this model, Dr. Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you simultaneously cultivate your personal power and spiritual growth.

By teaching you to see your body and spirit in a new way, Anatomy of the Spirit provides you with the tools for spiritual maturity and physical wholeness that will change your life.

What I Thought:

I listened to this book on Audible as we drove to the cottage for the September long weekend. It was a 2 hour and 23 min listen so it was perfect for our 5-hour drive!

I really loved that this booked combined Christian teachings which I’m familiar with from my upbringing with Jewish traditions and linked it to the Chakra system which I’ve become fascinated with in my 30s.

I got a lot out of the chapter on the Third Chakra: Personal Power it really made me think about how I view myself and if I truly like myself. The fourth chapter on the Fourth Chakra: Emotional Power made me view forgiving in a brand new light. The principle around how our health is linked to our personal power was fascinating to me. I really like Caroline Myss’s teaching style and I’m excited to dive into more of her teachings.

Book Review: Do Less

7 / 28 / 215 / 12 / 22

Synopsis on Kobo.com

A practical and spiritual guide for working moms to learn how to have more by doing less.

This is a book for working women and mothers who are ready to release the culturally inherited belief that their worth is equal to their productivity, and instead create a personal and professional life that’s based on presence, meaning, and joy. As opposed to focusing on “fitting it all in,” time management, and leaning in, as so many books geared at ambitious women do, this book embraces the notion that through doing less women can have–and be–more.

The addiction to busyness and the obsession with always trying to do more leads women, especially working mothers, to feel like they’re always failing their families, their careers, their spouses, and themselves. This book will give women the permission and tools to change the way they approach their lives and allow them to embrace living in tune with the cyclical nature of the feminine, cutting out the extraneous busyness from their lives so they have more satisfaction and joy, and letting themselves be more often instead of doing all the time.

Do Less offers the reader a series of 14 experiments to try to see what would happen if she did less in one specific way. So, rather than approaching doing less as an entire life overhaul (which is overwhelming in and of itself), this book gives the reader bite-sized steps to try incorporating over 2 weeks!

Do Less by Kate Northrup

What I Thought:

I enjoyed this book and definitely got a few useful tips from the experiments. As someone who has already gone through a life-changing medical diagnosis, that changed how I take care of myself so I don’t get into burnout I appreciated what Kate is trying to teach her readers.

There are 14 experiments that you can try, journal through and figure out just how to move through the world differently (especially as a Mother). I definitely did write down my vital few (things that matter to me most) in a note on my phone and then appreciate the chapter on checking your vitals (which involves reviewing your activities each month) to ensure they line up with your vitals.

Before I got pregnant and birthed the twins into this world, I had started to really align with planning out my months based on my menstrual cycle. I need to get back to how I plan my activities around the new and the full moon and my four phases of energy each month. So this book is a great resource for a woman trying to align more with her monthly energy cycle vs. trying to focus on the men’s 24-hour energy cycle.

Book Review: What The Heck Is EOS?

6 / 14 / 215 / 12 / 22

Synopsis on Kobo.com

Has your company struggled to roll EOS out to all levels of your organization? Do your employees understand why EOS is important or even what it is?

What the Heck is EOS? is for the millions of employees in companies running their businesses on EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System). An easy and fast read, this book answers the questions many employees have about EOS and their company:

  • What is an operating system?
  • What is EOS and why is my company using it?
  • What are the EOS foundational tools and how do they impact me?
  • What’s in it for me?

Designed to engage employees in the EOS process and tools, What the Heck is EOS? uses simple, straightforward language and provides questions about each tool for managers and employees to discuss creating more ownership and buy-in at the staff level. After reading this book, employees will not only have a better understanding of EOS but they will be more engaged, taking an active role in helping achieve your company’s vision.

What The Heck Is EOS?

What I Thought?

This is another book that I was sent to read for my new job at Predictable Revenue. Our company uses the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to run the business. It was an interesting read so that I can understand terms and acronyms that are thrown around the office. Chapter 5 about Rocks was the most important chapter for me since we review Rocks in several team meetings and as an organization once a week. While I don’t think the book is earth-shattering in terms of how to run a company it definitely gives a great framework for everyone to follow. Which in turn, helps reduce confusion and long meetings – to me that’s a positive!

Book Review: Predictable Revenue

6 / 7 / 215 / 12 / 22

Synopsis on Kobo.com

GROW REVENUE BY 300% OR MORE AND MAKE IT PREDICTABLE…

“Alexander Graham Bell discovered the telephone, Thomas Edison discovered electricity and Aaron Ross discovered the Enterprise Market for Salesforce.com.”

SHELLY DAVENPORT – VP Worldwide Sales at Replicon & ex-VP Corporate Sales at Salesforce.com

Discover the outbound sales process that, in just a few years, helped add $100 million in recurring revenue to Salesforce.com, almost doubling their enterprise growth… with zero cold calls.

This is NOT another book about how to cold call or close deals. This is an entirely new kind of sales bible for CEOs, entrepreneurs and sales VPs to help you build a sales machine. What does it take for your sales team to generate as many highly-qualified new leads as you want, create predictable revenue, and meet your financial goals without your constant focus and attention?

Predictable Revenue

What I Thought:

So I’m going back to work! What does that have to do with a book review?

I am ending my mat leave today to start a new Director of Marketing role at the company called Predictable Revenue. The company is based on this book by one of its co-founder’s Aaron Ross. My new boss sent me a copy of the book to read as I get onboarded so I devoured it this weekend before the family woke up or while the twins napped.

I wasn’t sure what to think of this book before reading it but I really really enjoyed it. Maybe because I haven’t read a business book in a long time. No, but really, it was an easy read while jam-packed with value. While I’m not formally in sales, I am part of the revenue team and everyone contributes to revenue generation. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book where the author recommends that those with no formal sales training read Chapter 6 (Lead Generation and ‘Seeds, Nets & Spears’) and 7 (Seven Fatal Sales Mistakes CEOs and Sales VPs Make) respectively first. I ended up highlighting so many nuggets of wisdom.

I loved the management tips which I’ll be using to coach our marketing team and I really enjoyed reading about the V2MOM Planning Process which I’m excited to nurture within our organization.

Book Review: Heal Your Birth Story

3 / 10 / 215 / 17 / 22

Synopsis from Amazon

Psychologist and birth trauma expert Maureen Campion shares her lessons for releasing the unexpected wounds that come from having a rough birth experience. Birth can be beautiful and spiritual and joyous but there are also terrifying, emotionally raw, painful moments that can be difficult to move past. This book offers you a chance to experience the healing power of working through your birth story, while learning about trauma and developing coping skills for all those complicated feelings. Maureen Campion shares her personal experience with birth trauma and the work she has been doing working with mothers through workshops and counseling to address resolving unexpected birth outcomes. Heal Your Birth Story offers new understanding to the impact of birth on mothers and their partners. Journaling exercises are offered to lead the reader through multiple layers of understanding and healing.

What I Thought:

After several birth complications in a traumatic birth story, I knew I would need several resources to help me heal. From sharing my story with my postpartum doula to finding a therapist in town to reading two books. This book was lent to me by my postpartum doula and the other was mailed to me by a friend. You can find that book review here.

I really like how the book broke down healing into different parts by chapter. That healing isn’t linear and sometimes is compartmentalized.

From facing rage to the mess of mothering, to how our birth story impacts our partner and our relationship to trauma at the hands of our providers. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this book to any mother healing their birth story. At the end of each chapter there is an exercise for you to consider and a paragraph for our partners should they choose to read this book.

Snowy Day Date We’ve done 4 dates this month. T Snowy Day Date

We’ve done 4 dates this month. The goal is to go on one weekly date night this year. We couldn’t have done it without the support of my parents who come over to play with the babes or sit in the house while they sleep.

Week 1: Afternoon + Dinner w/ Friends
Week 2: Escape Room
Week 3: Skating Trail
Week 4: Day Date (Coffee Shops, Snowshoe + Brewing Lunch)

We’re even taking off on a “honeymoon” next month with the help of Mike’s parents. We are truly blessed by the support we receive from both sets of parents so that we can have time to focus on our relationship with each other too.

We’ve got 4 dates to plan and schedule for February. A dog sledding adventure is already booked, for sure we’ll be doing another escape room but give us 2 more ideas! Can you tell we don’t like the standard dinner out LOL.
