Bald Men Get Ratings

10 / 7 / 09

This line from Media in Canada made my morning: “Flashpoint will go into production on a second season of the shot-in-Toronto action series early next year after CTV ordered 13 more episodes of the prime-time hit yesterday.”

Yeahhhh for Bald Men who get ratings! This show is awesome, well-written, well cast and I definitely enjoy it.

The great part about this show in the Media world is that it was picked up on both sides of the border. CBS records an average of 7 million viewers while CTV consistently averages 1.1 million viewers since the show launched in July. Next fist pump is due to the shift from Friday to a Thursday time slot. Which I’m sure helped out the ratings factor. They started the show in the summer during a slow time to grow an audience who will hopefully stay loyal beyond the summer months.

The characters are developing well. From Jules played by Amy Jo Johnson to Sam, Sgt. Gregory Parker and Ed Lane (the bald man if you are unfamiliar with the show). I saw Amy at the CTV.ca Fall Up fronts and for the life of me couldn’t remember what she was on prior to this show. I had to read her bio to find out it was Felicity. However she is making her mark with this show and asserting herself as the lone female for all the women viewers to identify with [new female in last week’s episode!]. The characters deal with their jobs and have human moments that endear us and recognize the profession for what it is. Difficult and Heartwarming.

So CSI has helped put Vegas, Miami and New York on the map. Will Flashpoint do the same for Toronto?

That’s a whole other blog about destination marketing and TV shows.

[This show is now in it’s 2nd season and I’m so proud I called it a success!]

Alpha Female

10 / 6 / 0911 / 1 / 09

“A dominant or assertive woman, a woman boss, the leader among a group of females.” – Source: Urban Dictionary

As I choose which path my blog will take I have been inspired by a fellow Alpha Female in my industry to write about all things Alpha Female. Three things that come to mind that an Alpha Female need to stay on top of her game are her health, her approach to her career path and how she utilizes media to stay on top. I think I will develop my writing around these things as they are my passion and I live them every day.

Let me know your thoughts?

My Fitness Why

9 / 14 / 0911 / 1 / 09

“The longest journey starts with a single step.”

From the movie Precious – c/o Coco and Lowe

I have always been a somewhat healthy slim girl. I was a ballet dancer for the first 13 years of my life then involved in musical theatre and a dance club throughout high school and university. I started going to the on campus gym at McMaster University and became a CFL cheerleader in 2004 for the Hamilton Ti-Cats and in 2006 for the Toronto Argonauts. I have always been fairly “fit”. By fit I mean tiny. Didn’t really have to watch what I ate. Didn’t really have to exert too much effort to stay small. I’ve hired personal trainers before but never really done a whole package training deal. By that I mean concentrating on fitness, health and diet.

In January 2009, I recognized a former Ti-Cats cheerleader (Ashley Harrison) on the cover of Oxygen. We didn’t cheer together the same year but I recognized her from pictures. I immediately said in my head, if she can do it why can’t I? So we’ll chalk up my fitness passion AHA moment to a competitive “I can do what you can do” mentality.

Oxygen Cover

In February, 2009 I started my research. Looked into protein powder, purchased every fitness magazine at the bookstore and started a new training regime.

First step: Progress Pictures. Oh lord! All Winter I ate my heart out in microwave bags of popcorn, refined carbs, sugars, ice cream, dairy, etc. You name it. I probably ate it. I have always been a slim girl but I turned 26 last year and bam! No more perfect metabolism. What’s that under my butt? Cellulite? Egad.

Second step: Cardio! I started pushing myself to wake up 30 mins earlier than I normally did to hit the elliptical in my condo’s gym. What a difference the morning workout made. It was hard getting up but I started to see a difference in my energy level.

Third step: Weights! Started hitting my Extreme Fitness location near my office after work to lift weights. Figured out a workout plan using Oxygen magazine, online fitness tools and watching and learning others in the gym.

Fourth step: Kick it up a notch! Lyzabeth Lopez’s Hourglass Workout! I enlisted in May in her month long Bootcamp for women. I had no idea what hit me. The first week of the program is something that is lovingly referred to as Hell Week. I had shin splints, trouble sitting down in chairs, groaned getting out of bed and absolutely loved it! Lyzabeth is the most positive and caring person I’ve met in the industry so far! Nothing but good things to say. She definitely kicked my butt. My focus in the workout was less on weight loss but more on muscle gain. So I’d be doing muscle building exercises while the others were doing cardio. Lyzabeth really tailors the program to her participants.

Fifth step: Functional strength! I had attended a training with the Hourglass Workout at the DCC. The Dynamic Conditioning Centre in Toronto at Yonge/Wellesley is crazy. I like to refer to it as a man’s playground. Complete with sand pit, tire tractors and turf path for pulling and pushing plates! Tyler helped me out for a few sessions and gave me a great total body strengthening workout.

Sixth step: Fitness Model Workshop with Lyzabeth Lopez. Learn tricks of the trade. What to purchase for tanning, how to do photos shoots, submit to magazines, etc and learn how to walk and pose! It was a great summer course and I definitely learned some new things to add to my repertoire.

Seventh step: Nutrition. During the Hourglass Workout I received a tailored meal plan from Lyzabeth as part of the program and learned to take control of what I eat. I don’t diet. I eat clean. Over the course of several months I also enlisted the help of a Naturopath to help me with some health problems that I was worried about might affect my training.

It’s now September 14, 2009. I’m 5 days away from my first fitness competition. I’ve never felt better. I’ve transformed my body. I’ve built muscle. I have energy. I feel healthy and happy. For me I’ve achieved my goal of competiting in a fitness event. I would love to place top 10. Cmon I’m competitive remember! But overall and whatever the outcome I’m just happy that I’ve taken control of my health and have never felt or looked better.

I loved the heck out of July! What’s something you I loved the heck out of July! What’s something you did this month that created a core memory?!?

We’re obsessed with seasonal bucket lists over here. We created a fun list this summer and have knocked off most of the items already. Just a few more for August!

Do you have a summer bucket list??

I’ve started doing co-working sessions with my wedding planner @laurs.sinclair & wedding photographer @iam.stephaniemason. They are luckily best friends and 8 years later adopting me into their friend circle which is giving me life in the friendship department!

In the summer, for our monthly date night we send the twins to my parents for a sleepover and go golfing together! We’ve been trying out courses close to home so we can race home to our puppy and eat a lazy dinner together!

What’s your favourite course in the west end of Ottawa?

The epic yes day continues! We started this tradition on our twins birthday last year and did it again.

This year we had breakfast pizza, went rock climbing, ate cotton candy, Mac and Cheese, Banaba Pudding, went mini putting and had Boston Pizza for dinner!

Everyone was exhausted and had hurting tummies!

Happy 6th Birthday Pineault Twins!! It’s our seco Happy 6th Birthday Pineault Twins!!

It’s our second annual tradition of doing a yes day for their birthday. They get to choose the food and one activity each that we do as a family! Here’s the recap!

Rock Climbing @altitudegym
Mac & Cheese @churchillswestboro
Cotton Candy
Banana Pudding @happyrollsdessertbar
Mini Putt @puttingedge
Pizza @bphuntclub

Passed out from the sugar crash!

Overheard the next morning: Next year I’m only choosing one treat so my tummy doesn’t hurt.

We eat very healthy but we want them to know what “fun” things taste like but now they understand why we don’t normally eat alllllll the treats!

Something I wish I had learned in my teens was tha Something I wish I had learned in my teens was that letters did not define my worth.

My parents taught me to work hard, but along the way, I sought their acceptance in my grades, not just because I am.

That took me years to unpack.
