My final book review for the year!
What kobo.com says:
Your bucket list. Quarterly objectives. Strategic plans. Big dreams. Goals. Lots of goals and plans to achieve those goals—no matter what. Except… You’re not chasing the goal itself, you’re actually chasing the feeling that you hope to achieve that goal will give you.
This means we have the procedures of achievement upside down. We go after the stuff we want to have, get, or accomplish, and we hope that we’ll be fulfilled when we get there. It’s backward. And it’s burning us out.
So what if you first got clear on how you actually wanted to feel in your life, and then created some “Goals with Soul”?
With The Desire Map, Danielle LaPorte brings you a holistic life-planning tool that will revolutionize the way you go after what you want in life. Unapologetically passionate and with plenty of warm wit, LaPorte turns the concept of ambition inside out and offers an inspired, refreshingly practical workbook for using the Desire Map process:
- Identify your “core desired feelings” in every life domain: livelihood & lifestyle, body & wellness, creativity & learning, relationships & society, and essence & spirituality
- Create practical “Goals with Soul” to generate your core desired feelings
- Why easing up on your expectations actually liberates you to reach your goals
- Self-assessment quizzes, worksheets, and complete Desire Mapping tools for creating the life you truly long for
What I say: I really enjoyed this book. I have already intuitively been goal-planning around how I want to feel. I set long-term & short-term goals and the ones I usually don’t complete are ones that I just don’t “feel” for anymore. It was interesting to dive into the difference between desires & feelings and I’m not really sure I can actually explain it but I get identifying how I want to feel in different areas of my life and then setting goals with soul that are based on achieving & experiencing a feeling that I deeply desire.
I love the workbook section. My favourite part was writing out what I’m grateful for in the 5 different life categories and also what’s not working in them. After that, you get a free flow writing on how you want to feel in each category which I thoroughly enjoyed working through. From there I sat with the feelings and read definitions on dictionary.com, looked up synonyms on thesaurus.com and circled around 10 words.
I then went to Danielle LaPorte’s Core Desired Feeling Library to see if any of those words spoke to me. I realized that Zeal & Zestful were really similar and VITAL spoke to me more strongly. Brave & Daring were similar so I settled on BRAVE. Impactful and Plentiful had to do with livelihood & lifestyle and INSPIRED captured both of those feelings into one for me. And EASE & LOVE still stood strong. So here are the 5 core desired feelings I’m going to sit with this week as I finalize my 2015 goal setting for next year.
And if I need a reminder of my feelings I have them all pinned to a Pinterest Board called Desire Map 🙂
Hi Robyn! I recently came across you blog and have already found so much great information. The goal setting sections are great. Have you shared what your perfect day looks like? It’s something Lewis Howes and Chalene Johnson refer to often in their podcasts.
Thanks again for all the inspiration!

I haven’t shared on the blog yet but I’ve done the exercise before during the Transformation Retreat I’ve attended for the past two years.
