Alpha Female Friday – Rebekah Borucki

Every Friday I am going to feature a woman that I adore. They exude all the qualities of an Alpha Female and I want to dig into their lives to get some nuggets of knowledge to help us all live happier, healthier lives balancing life & work.

Robyn Preamble: Way back in December 2013 I tried to do a Fearless Female Friday series of posts featuring women that inspired me. Rebekah Borucki was one of my first posts!  I’m pretty sure I only did 2 features before I let that idea lull. I’ve resurrected it in Alpha Female Friday posts and couldn’t be happier with learning work / life harmony strategies from different women. Bex has “been in my (social media) life” for a few years now. I used to call her my meditation guru but she’d yell at me lovingly for using the word guru if she knew that. She’s got a pretty tough exterior some days when she’s administering tough love to the world and she’s helped me in times where I need to learn to reframe things or specific lessons. I adore her plain and simple but enough about me and my love for her let’s jump into the interview.

Definition of an Alpha Female

An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony.

Type A Alpha Females often come across as strong willed and selfish. When we stay true to our authentic selves and stay true to our mission we shine. A true Alpha Female puts the needs of herself first without sacrificing her principles or dignity. She fills up her cup or gas tank first so that she has enough energy for her friends, family, and coworkers. She strives for synergy with the world around her. She wants a perfect work/life balance but knows that it requires being true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with the people in her life.

How are you an Alpha Female?

I’m an Alpha Female, because I helped you change the definition of Alpha Female a bit. As a happily married mother-of-five, most would think that I’m putting the needs of my family first, but that isn’t the case. I’m always putting myself first, unapologetically. As an Alpha Female, I’m in charge of a lot, and that means that my health and happiness are a priority, before anything else. If I’m not (physically, emotionally, or mentally) healthy this captain will sink this ship. And because the health of my marriage, my family, my business, and my relationships are my whole reason for being, I have to take care of myself first. It’s not selfish to make taking care of myself a priority; it’s an ultimate act of love and service. That being said, I’m an Alpha Female because I know that I’m in charge of my destiny. What I do in every moment matters, and I never leave my life up to chance.

Does work/life balance exist?

Of course work/life balance exists… for those of us who understand that having it all means having your priorities in check. Women are constantly hearing messages that they have to choose home or work, or that they have to sacrifice total success in one area of their lives to achieve it in another. I believe that having it all and creating balance is about knowing what makes your happy – what fuels your fire – and practicing those things on a regular basis. Balance isn’t about having equal parts of all the things all the time. Balance is feeling satisfied, meeting situations with ease, and understanding that what feels good is what’s good for you. I’m always doing what I most want to be doing – practicing my priorities, and I think that’s true for all of us. A lot of women’s priorities are to please others, fix themselves, or compete. I’m not into any of that. My priority is feeling good and creating a good life for the people I love.

What are you most passionate about?

My greatest passion outside of raising my family is teaching others how to create lives that they want. My deepest belief is that we have all that we need to heal ourselves of hurt and achieve all of our dreams. We just need to be given the tools that will help to uncover the layers of muck that we’ve collected through our lifetimes on this planet. Our inner truth – our pristine intuition – is covered with layers of doubt, insecurity, shame… When we access the tools that help peel those layers away, we unlock our limitlessness. My passion is giving people access to those tools.

What are you daily health habits that keep your immune system boosted?

I have many non-negotiables that support my health. I have a daily meditation and gratitude practice that doesn’t get bumped for anything. It happens first thing in the morning, before I even look at my phone. My 4-minute meditation videos on YouTube were born out of having very little time, but also knowing that connecting to myself is crucial to my well-being. I also surround my workspaces (even my laundry room) with things that bring me visual pleasure – statues of unicorns, motivational messages that I’ve written to myself and affirmation calendars.  Getting outside is a priority, and living on a farm makes that easy. I make it a point to breathe in fresh air daily and to take the time to really LOOK at nature, taking in her beauty.

What is your weekly fitness routine like?

This is a tough one to admit, but I don’t have one! I haven’t been to the gym or a yoga class on a regular basis in two years. With five kids, it’s hard to NOT be active – babywearing, lugging laundry, running up and down stairs. I try to move as much as possible, but I also look at all my activities as exercise that benefits my body. Studies have shown that just acknowledging regular everyday activity as exercise allows you to burn more calories and build muscle.

How do you challenge yourself fitness wise?

At this time in my life, I resist physical challenge and instead approach exercise with ease. I’m good with a long walk or a leisurely bike ride. I was never happy when I was pushing myself to my limits physically. Now that I’m easy on my body, I’m loving how it looks and feels more than ever.

What are your daily habits for winding down at night and reducing stress?

My marriage is at the center of my life, so I make time for it every day. My husband and I make time every night to be together, sit down in front of a silly show or a random movie we’ve never heard of, sip some whiskey and hot apple cider (now that it’s getting cold outside), and make time to connect. We talk, cuddle, and then always go to bed together. Our connection supports everything I do in a day, so I make it a priority to honor that without fail or interruption.

What are you daily/weekly nutrition habits that keep you well nourished?

My food rules are simple. I eat real food, I don’t deny or resist my cravings, I drink lots of tea and water, I avoid caffeine, I eat until I’m satisfied, and I allow food to feel good. I don’t meal-prep or count calories and I also don’t know what I weigh. I track nothing. Meals are whatever I want them to be – sometimes dinner means a giant watermelon. Intuition drives all of my eating.

What is your definition of happiness?

Happiness is being connected to my higher self, meeting all situations with ease, knowing that I am fully supported in my efforts, knowing that I have purpose and that my work is worthy. It is being able to support and guide that people I love, and being loved by those people in return. There’s nothing more than that.
