Alpha Female Friday – Laura Davidson

Every Friday I am going to feature a woman that I adore. They exude all the qualities of an Alpha Female and I want to dig into their lives to get some nuggets of knowledge to help us all live happier, healthier lives balancing life & work.

Definition of an Alpha Female

An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony.

She is the brightest star in her constellation.  When an Alpha Female stays true to their authentic selves and their missions they shine.  An Alpha Female puts herself first because she deserves self-care and love. She knows that work/life harmony is found by staying true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with all the people in her life.

What do you think of the definition and how are you an Alpha Female?

For me, the definition of an Alpha Female is pretty bang on. I would include the fact that unlike an alpha male, who is the dominant, controlling once of the group, the Alpha Female extends her strengths to others by being, strong, confident and supportive of others.

I am an Alpha Female because I take charge and lead others in a way that helps them create positive change for themselves. There are very few things in life that scare me and I am the type of person to jump in feet first and just go for it.

What are you most passionate about?

Up until a few months ago, I had not found my passion. I can confidently say that my passion is fitness and overall health and wellness. There is something about the transformation process and self-improvement that is consuming. Pushing your body to the next level and seeing what it can really do is one of the most incredible accomplishments. You are your own competition.

What does work/life harmony look like for you?

My current work / life harmony is 75% work 25% life. This is due to the fact that I am currently in a 9-5 job while building my startup WHISTLE. I have made social sacrifices for personal and professional growth and I do not regret any of it.

Share with us a time when work/life balance was out of wack? What was your aha moment that taught you it was ok to take care of yourself first?

Throughout my mid-twenties my work life balance was definitely out of whack. It was 75% life 25% work. I was under stimulated and under motivated by my 9-5 job and hadn’t figured out my passion and true calling in life. 2016 was the year when enough was enough. I flipped a switch and said enough of this bullshit. I focused on myself, my start up and have truly found myself in the process.

How do you nourish yourself?

I go for a run. I was never the person to say this but I recently started running outdoors down by the waterfront and I now get it. There is something about being outside, feeling free and breaking personal records. Every run gets better and I do some of my best thinking and idea generation during an outdoor run.

What is your weekly fitness routine like?

Each week is a little bit different but the goal is the same – sweat. I like to lift weights and get that strength training in a few days a week, hit a spin or group workout class and fit in an outdoor run up to 10km.

What are your daily habits for winding down at night and reducing stress?

Thankfully I do not get stressed. I have never had a moment of panic over something, whether it be a test, workload, speech, I just do it. Everything always works out in the end and stress just gets in the way. I usually end off my nights with a show on Netflix and a nightly walk with my dog. Always a nice way to finish off a long day.

What are some pain points of being an Alpha Female that you have to problem solve for?

I feel that a common pain point almost every female has to deal with is being taken seriously in business. Because I am an Alpha Female I demand that respect I don’t ask for it, and once that level of dominance is displayed to another male or female it is usually received. If I’ve learned anything it’s don’t let someone walk all over you, demand what you want and if they can’t give it to you move on. Don’t bow down to someone else because you think they are above you. Don’t be pushed around and put up with bullshit.

What is your definition of happiness?

For me happiness is freedom. Freedom to choose how and with whom I want to spend my days. I don’t want to report to anyone that I don’t want to report to. Freedom to live, work and travel the way I want is my definition of happiness.
