Alpha Female Friday – Jessica DeBry

Every Friday I am going to feature a woman that I adore. They exude all the qualities of an Alpha Female and I want to dig into their lives to get some nuggets of knowledge to help us all live happier, healthier lives balancing life & work.

Definition of an Alpha Female

An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony.

She is the brightest star in her constellation.  When an Alpha Female stays true to their authentic selves and their missions they shine.  An Alpha Female puts herself first because she deserves self-care and love. She knows that work/life harmony is found by staying true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with all the people in her life.

What do you think of the definition and how are you an Alpha Female?
I love the definition of Alpha Female and I’m pretty sure she’s my spirit animal!
I’m an Alpha Female because I refuse to settle. Society tells women that they can’t have it all, that a successful career doing what you love, a happy life filled with joy and abundance, and a loving relationship and family is impossible to achieve harmoniously, and I say SCREW THAT.
I believe women should embrace their power and realize what they are truly capable of … and that includes anything and everything that they want to achieve.
What does work/life harmony look like for you?
To me, work/life harmony means having complete control over my time. Some days, this might mean working all day on business-related stuff like coaching with clients, working on trainings, writing blog posts, etc. Other days, it’s having an entire day outside with my husband Wes, down by the water and with a picnic lunch. Either way, it’s being able to do everything in life that sets my soul on fire.
Share with us a time when work/life balance was out of whack? What was your aha moment that taught you it was ok to take care of yourself first?
I’ve found through my own journey that the level of satisfaction I’m having with my work is directly related to the level of satisfaction I’m having with life. I tend to put TOO MUCH pride into my work and when it’s not going in the right direction, my life/wellbeing suffers too.
My Aha moment was realizing that I need to put my own self-worth first. I realized that I absolutely shouldn’t place my worth on how well my business is doing, instead, I have to be confident that I am 100% worthy and deserving first and foremost.
This Aha moment was prompted after my first entrepreneurial endeavor failed. I felt worthless. I didn’t leave the house for weeks. I had ZERO work/life balance because I didn’t have either … zero work, and zero life because I forced myself into a mental hole. A few years later, after the dust settled, I realized that I had self-sabotaged my own failure because of my lack of self-worth. This Aha moment was a turning point for me personally and professionally.
What are you most passionate about?
This is a loaded question because I am passionate about A LOT of stuff (I call it a zest for life, ha!). Right now though, I’m really passionate about female empowerment and entrepreneurship. I believe we live in the best time in history for women to step into their power and create their destiny. It sounds cliche and cheesy, but I truly believe that you can profit from your passion, and my mission is to show others how to do that.
How do you nourish yourself?
Creating a morning routine was one of the best things I’ve ever done for my mind, body, and spirit. I adopted it when I was still working 9-5 while building my online biz and I still continue it now as a full-time entrepreneur.
My best days start by waking up early, hydrating with 16 ounces of water and taking time to write in my journal and day planner. I go for an outdoor walk or complete a quick workout, then spend 5 minutes on visualization, and make a big green smoothie. The entire morning routine takes 90 minutes from start-to-finish and I’m UNSTOPPABLE afterwards!
What is your weekly fitness routine like?
Truthfully, it’s all over the place! I don’t have a set routine but I aim to be active daily. This includes walking, jogging, free weights, workout DVDs, etc. I LOVE to workout outdoors, but I recently moved from Southern California to Arizona and am having a hard time with the hot summer temperatures!
What are your daily habits for winding down at night and reducing stress?
I love to cook and it definitely helps me reduce stress. I’ll put some music on, sometimes pour a glass of wine, open up a cookbook (or Pinterest!) and get to it. Something about chopping up veggies that really puts me in the zone, ha! Once dinner is made, Wes and I will sit down together and discuss our days. Before bed I’ll read an enjoyable book or watch a light-hearted TV show.
What are some pain points of being an Alpha Female that you have to problem solve for?
From the outside, I appear as an assertive, always-positive, fearless individual. And while I do identify with those traits, the truth is, I have my “off days” too. I can be shy, feel down, and be fearful.
But a misconception I encounter a lot from women I speak with is that they say, “I’m not like you” … and I know what they mean is that they think they can’t achieve their business goals because they’re comparing their backstage to my front stage.
As an Alpha Female, I’m trying to find the balance between the strong, confident leader and the vulnerable, relatable woman.
What is your definition of happiness?
Happiness for me is meeting my own internal expectations for myself. It’s fulfilling my potential, and always showing up 100% for the things that bring me most joy – my business, my marriage, my family, and my friendships.
On a lighter note … happiness is also sitting on the beach in Maui, with a mai tai in hand and watching the sunset with Wes. Just sayin’!
