Alpha Female Friday – Melanie Fitzpatrick

Every Friday I am going to feature a woman that I adore. They exude all the qualities of an Alpha Female and I want to dig into their lives to get some nuggets of knowledge to help us all live happier, healthier lives balancing life & work.

Definition of an Alpha Female

An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony.

Type A Alpha Females often come across as strong willed and selfish. When we stay true to our authentic selves and stay true to our mission we shine. A true Alpha Female puts the needs of herself first without sacrificing her principles or dignity. She fills up her cup or gas tank first so that she has enough energy for her friends, family, and coworkers. She strives for synergy with the world around her. She wants a perfect work/life balance but knows that it requires being true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with the people in her life.

How are you an Alpha Female?

I have always been self-motivated and driven – it’s just the way I am wired. I kind of view myself as a start-up! I have a lot of warrior energy, as an Aries – I love adventure and exploring new! I am surrounded by my desires and goals that are represented on Vison boards and Mind maps in my work space. I am fueled by excitement and opportunity to create energizing enterprises and work towards a satisfied completion.

2. What does work/life harmony look like for you?

Since I left the corporate world to pursue my ‘second chapter’ in life, ie my career re-invention a year and a half ago, my life style shifted to a slower more ponderous pace – and I struggled with having less activity, but I needed the retreat to allow myself to feel into my next adventure. I got to focus on creating a supportive home environment for my family, prepare healthy home cooked meals and run my son around so he could pursue his after school passions. So, essentially after 28 years of traveling away from home for my career – I was able to enhance the life of my son and husband within our home. I even took on some big projects like a kitchen renovation and get our investment property up and running. I also pursued a life-long dream and learned how to play guitar during time frame too!

Now that I am emerging as an entrepreneur, I am busy developing my platform Live in YOUR Truth, my new Video Series – The Truth & Vision Channel, growing my podcast Live in YOUR Truth Radio and coaching Women to step into their full potential and facilitating workshops! I really appreciate that I get create my own schedule based on my family, my personal and business needs. The concept of work, life balance is an elusive one. I like to reframe the concept in this way; this is my life; I get to prioritize each day and month according to my dreams and goals and my family’s needs and desires. Each facet gets energy, love, focus and hard work and these things determine the flow of each day. I believe in creating flow instead of balance. It helps that I keep a

schedule of everyone’s activities and use alerts to keep me on track. If I am aligned with my priorities, I feel a harmony within myself – if I don’t feel this harmony – then I know I am out of alignment with what it is I desire and I need to correct my course!

What are you most passionate about?

Learning. I am a seeker, always desiring to grow personally and spiritually. Outdoor play and adventure; biking, hiking, skiing, and swimming in lakes or rivers. I love to express myself, and be creative in all things I do or touch; writing, speaking, crafting, decorating, entertaining friends, photographing, singing or playing my guitar. I am also passionate about potential; human potential. I want to encourage and see that everyone recognizes their potential for personal greatness. I am secretly a bit obsessive about this – don’t tell anyone!!!

3. What are you daily health habits that keep your immune system boosted?

Good clean mental thoughts, for starters! Healthy, loving, positive thoughts towards self are conducive to really keep our mental energy flowing and sends positive messages to the body, which helps our immune system to thrive. Citrus – I love citrus and try to get it in many forms of fruits. Greens and veggies a few times per day. Fresh air for purer blood follow to the heart and sun for a boost of vitamin D! Plus I occasionally juice and always take my supplements!

4. What is your weekly fitness routine like?

My fitness routine is seasonally based. Just coming out of winter, I have been doing indoor spinning 2 times per week, I ran outside in most conditions and temperatures – actually the colder the better 2 times per week and then I like to get upper body work outs in at home or the gym 2 times per week and skiing or hiking once per week. A few times per week, I do Yoga postures and stretching which are good for recovery from the other workouts I do. And if inspired, I shake my booty and do some free form dancing in my home office/studio!

5. How do you challenge yourself fitness wise?

I don’t really challenge myself too much. I do have fitness goals, but mainly I just listen to what my body wants and fulfill its needs. For example, I have never been a runner because as a former ballerina, my knees and hips could never handle the impact, so I chose other aerobic workouts instead. But for some reason this winter, my body just wanted to run, so I honored it and increased my strength and stamina to build up to a 3 mile runs at a time.

6. What are you daily/weekly nutrition habits that keep you well nourished?

I try and eat protein at each meal. It really helps my metabolism and blood sugar to stabilize and reduce cravings for junk. I also eat a protein bar between breakfast and lunch or around 3 or 4 pm when I get hungry, each day. I constantly drink water, and try and consume greens and fruit 2 to 3 servings per day. I am big on supplements and low on caffeine. I do love a good nutritional protein shake a few time per week.

7. What are your daily habits for winding down at night and reducing stress?

I am not a great sleeper. It runs in my family! So I do have a sleep routine to aide me in the process. I start by making sure I have created my list of important things to be done the next day is on my desk – because if I don’t as soon as my head hits the pillow I will be thinking about it. Next I prepare a cup of chamomile tea, spread some lavender essential oil on my wrists, the scent and ritual of this signals my mind and body its sleep time. I drink my tea and read from my kindle or book on my night stand. Even though my night stand is filled with books on personal and spiritual development – I prefer fiction just before bed. I do not want anything that will get my mind activated. I will often do a mental inventory of my day and notice what I am grateful for, or what felt unfinished or uncomfortable and try to gain some clarity on it, so as not to allow it to keep me from falling asleep.

8. What are some pain points of being an Alpha Female that you have to problem solve for? Whether it be how people perceive your personality, or managing ourselves – for example the amount of things we do, etc

I know my energy and confidence can be overpowering to some people and circumstances. My awareness has become heightened to this now and I have learned to balance my energy, if necessary, without apologizing for who I am!

9. What is your definition of happiness?

I believe that happiness is a relationship we cultivate with ourselves. It is a choice. And I have the power to shift my emotions, beliefs and energy at any time within myself in order to be happy and so this is my practice. At its essence – to be happy you must learn to love yourself. Creating a life you love is a choice that comes from knowing and honoring what it is you want, and creating it every day.
