Every Friday I am going to feature a woman that I adore. They exude all the qualities of an Alpha Female and I want to dig into their lives to get some nuggets of knowledge to help us all live happier, healthier lives balancing life & work.
Definition of an Alpha Female
An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony.
Type A Alpha Females often come across as strong willed and selfish. When we stay true to our authentic selves and stay true to our mission we shine. A true Alpha Female puts the needs of herself first without sacrificing her principles or dignity. She fills up her cup or gas tank first so that she has enough energy for her friends, family, and coworkers. A true Alpha Female strives for synergy with the world around her. She wants a perfect work/life balance but knows that it requires being true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with the people in her life.

How are you an Alpha Female?
When I hear the term Alpha Female a few words in particular come to my mind – strong, bold, and passionate – and I definitely believe I am all of those, as well as an Alpha Female, but I can’t help but think how surreal it is that I consider myself an Alpha Female today because 10 years ago I would have considered myself anything but! I truly believe that the struggles that I have been through throughout my life have allowed me to become an Alpha Female and have the qualities like being strong, bold, and passionate, which are just some of the things I think of when I hear that term. When I say strong, I mean in terms of mental strength, like being mentally unbreakable. Like, no matter what happens in life, whatever comes at you, nothing can throw you off your mental game because you’re so okay and so in tune with yourself. Bold because Alpha Females and myself are not afraid to be who they are, we just don’t care what others think about who we are because, again, we are just so ok with who we are that nothing else really matters. And passionate because I am constantly creating new ways I can help the people I know I was meant to help.
What is your work/life harmony like?
For me, it’s being able to work 7 days a week from the moment you wake up until the moment you go to bed because you’re so passionate about it. And then being able to indulge in self care days where you may not even touch the computer or read any emails for a day, or two, or three. This just happened to me recently when I was creating my most recent program that I launched in February. It was an ayurvedic based seasonal detox and for several weeks prior to the launch, it was all my boyfriend and I worked on. It was really awesome to work on a project together, I wrote the content and he designed everything I needed, but we literally worked on it day and night, no days off, for several weeks. Then, once we launched it, it was like “ahhh”. I just think it’s so special that I’m able to work at something I am so passionate about and then take days off whenever I want them or need them. Basically, that harmony is whatever makes you feel happy, passionate, and not stressed at any particular stage of your life or business. Some times it may be more work than play, but some times you might require more self care time than work. It’s whatever makes you feel good and satisfies you on all levels. I personally just like going with the flow.
What are you most passionate about?
Honestly, helping people feel free – in whatever way they need. For too many years I was shackled to an eating disorder and restrictive, obsessive behaviours. I literally felt like I was a prisoner, but then I discovered how to break free and I know so many people need to welcome freedom in their lives, too, but it doesn’t just have to be because of an eating disorder. People with allergies need to feel freedom, for an example, and I am so passionate about helping everyone just break away from whatever is holding them back and discover how they can bring freedom into their life.
What are your daily health habits that keep your immune system boosted?
Bone broth! And real food! I think to keep your immune system in tip top shape, you need to focus on your gut health, so I’m incorporating things like bone broth, fermented foods for probiotics, and other gut healing foods into my diet on a daily basis. Once I’ve adopted this type of lifestyle, my health has never been better. Immunity, mentally, you name it!
What is your weekly fitness routine like?
My overall focus is to just move my body in a way that makes me happy. Now, USUALLY, this means weight lifting because that’s where my passion and love truly does lie. I LOVE weight lifting. There’s just something about it that makes every cell of my body feel absolutely powerful. So, about 3 – 4 times a week I will do a workout with barbells and exercises like deadlifts and squats, but on the other days, you’ll find me just walking around the neighbourhood. Those are my two favourite forms of exercise – weight lifting and walking! Walking is actually when I usually meditate!
How do you challenge yourself fitness wise?
Honestly, my mindset around working out is very gentle, so I don’t know if the word “challenge” really applies to me at all. I really just like to focus on moving my body in a way that feels good to me on that given day in that given moment. I am really in tune with my body and I’ve learnt I’m always my happiest and healthiest when I just listen to my body and proceed without judgement. That doesn’t mean that I go to the gym and use light weights that don’t “challenge” me (and I’m using air quotes when I say that) because I definitely do love using those “challenging” weights because I really feel empowered and confident by doing so, but if I’m not feeling heavy deadlifts one day I’m not going to beat myself up about going way lighter in that lift than I did the previous week. I just listen to my body because I ignored it for too many years, so now my main focus is to always just listen to my body and always ENJOY what I’m doing, whether that be in the gym or out.
What are your daily/weekly nutrition habits that keep you well nourished?
I focus a lot on gut health because I believe that is the most important thing to focus on for overall health. So, I’m always incorporating some type of fermented food into my day. I really like any fermented veggie, but some times I will have kombucha – I’ve actually been enjoying those a lot lately! Also bone broth like I mentioned before and just a lot of real, whole food to be honest. I think being intuitive is super important when it comes to feeling nourished, as well. So, listening to my body is always something that comes into play.
What are your daily habits for winding down at night and reducing stress?
Oh, I love this question because I love my evenings! Usually my boyfriend and I are home together when he’s not out playing hockey, so we typically have a nice meal together and either watch a movie or hockey on TV! I always have a cup of tea made and gratitude journal every night. I am big into gratitude journaling. I do it morning and night and it has made such a huge difference in my life. I also started a book club this year, which was HUGE for me! So, I read every night before I go to bed. Some times it’s 10 pages and some nights it is 40 plus pages, but I do read every night and this is something I’m really proud of because I LOVE TO READ, but I seem to never stick with a book, but this online book club that I created this year has me really motivated to keep up with the book of the month! My goal is 12 books in 2016, which may not seem like a lot, but it’s a lot for me!
What are some pain points of being an Alpha Female that you have to problem solve for?
I think it would have to be having so many ideas because I am so passionate and so driven that when 2016 came I wrote this entire list of my goals for 2016. These were all business goals and this list was outrageously long and then in March I was chatting with a group of girlfriends who are all entrepreneurs as well and that’s when it clicked – it’s awesome to have all of these ideas and passions, but it’s ok to not do them all RIGHT NOW. Like, I guess I just have to focus on working on one thing at a time and knowing that’s ok if everything doesn’t get done right now!
What is your definition of happiness?
I was so excited to hear you ask this question as you know I’ve listened to so many of your past episodes already and when I first heard you ask this question I was taken back to when I actually asked myself this question 3 years ago and honestly, that was the time of my life when I was just learning to totally break free of everything holding me back once and for all. What I did was I defined what happiness meant to me and I also defined what healthy meant to me and then I made sure that those two things, health and happiness, were at the forefront of all of my decisions. So, happiness… to me it means health, which is why I had myself define health, but in addition to health, happiness is whatever you want it to be, honestly! No one’s happiness is going to look like my happiness and no one’s definition of health is going to look like mine. We are all so different and we have the choice to choose what makes us happy, which is pretty awesome!
