Alpha Female Friday – Annick Magac

Every Friday I am going to feature a woman that I adore. They exude all the qualities of an Alpha Female and I want to dig into their lives to get some nuggets of knowledge to help us all live happier, healthier lives balancing life & work.

Definition of an Alpha Female

An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony.

Type A Alpha Females often come across as strong willed and selfish. When we stay true to our authentic selves and stay true to our mission we shine. A true Alpha Female puts the needs of herself first without sacrificing her principles or dignity. She fills up her cup or gas tank first so that she has enough energy for her friends, family, and coworkers. A true Alpha Female strives for synergy with the world around her. She wants a perfect work/life balance but knows that it requires being true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with the people in her life.

How are you an Alpha Female?

I believe in showing up whole-heartedly in everything I do. That enthusiasm can come across as being intense. It is coupled with femininity, creativity, and mindfulness as we all know Alpha Females are unapologetically multi-faceted. As an Alpha Female, it is my responsibility to support, inspire, and lead others to find the greatness within themselves and their lives. Every day I work towards this goal and work on continually improving myself so I can show up in my full power to help others.
Does work/life balance exist?
This is one of my favorite topics! I could go on for days about this. We all want the notion of balance. However, I don’t believe it exists in the way we have been taught to understand it. Balance implies an equality of weight or attention. However, life is always in flux. Situations and people, change and evolve. It is impossible to have our attention equally distributed daily. This brings endless frustration to people. It is detrimental to people’s overall happiness because they are chasing something that doesn’t necessarily exist- which means they can never be happy.
When I work with people, we look at consistency instead of balance. Because so much in life is in flux, we crave consistency. We want comfort in routine. We want to feel grounded. Consistency in any endeavor, small or big, gives us the feeling we want from balance. However, we need to be aware of what is truly important to us versus what we think should be based on what society tells us. This way, we can ensure that where we put our time and attention is where we will get the most back mentally, physically, and spiritually.
What are you most passionate about?
I want to lead people to live more fearlessly, embrace who they are, and step into their power. Everyone deserves to be surrounded by beauty and to experience the power of good design. I am passionate about aligning people’s environment with who they are and their potential.
What are your daily health habits that keep your immune system boosted?
As someone who experienced adrenal fatigue and leaky gut, it is important to me to keep my immune system boosted to ensure that I can show up for life. This is a common issue for Alpha Females because we like to push ourselves in all aspects of our lives which can unknowingly lead to exhaustion. I always aim to drink at least 3 liters of water per day. I work with a Naturopath to make sure I round out my wellness with the appropriate supplements. I also visit an acupuncturist every 6 weeks to support my immune system. I consider those visits preventative maintenance. Because I work a lot of hours, it can be tempting to eat convenient food like protein bars and shakes which I will do when needed. However, I make an effort to eat whole real foods because there is a drastic difference in my energy level and focus.
What is your weekly fitness routine like?
The basis of my weekly routine is weightlifting, which I aim to do 4-6 days. I balance this with restorative walks and hikes in the beautiful Catskills, which helps to reduce stress and is a form of meditation for me. In an effort to spice up my routine, I joined a women’s hockey team this year. Playing a team sport as an adult is a whole different experience. I enjoy the camaraderie of these awesome women (17 to 65), pushing my body in a different way, and the child-like joy of playing a sport just for fun.
How do you challenge yourself fitness wise?
I competed in bodybuilding as a Bikini Competitor. I am undecided if I will return to the stage in the future. The process of training for a competition is extremely challenging and rewarding, however it is also incredibly time consuming (3+hrs per day in the gym). Right now, I am more interested in developing my strength and increasing my mobility. Hockey requires a different type of conditioning, and it has made me interested in developing more functional skills (hand/eye coordination, lateral movement). I recently started to do kettlebells, which is incredibly fun. I’m always up for an adventure, so if a friend invites me to run a race with them or do a new form of exercise, I will always say YES! It is my goal to continue to challenge my body with new ways of moving and to stay healthy enough to continue to workout through old age.
What are your daily habits for winding down at night and reducing stress?
My number one daily health goal is to get enough sleep. I believe in a good night time ritual to ease into a deep sleep and not be tired-but-wired before bed. As an entrepreneur is can be hard to turn it all off! At night, I often take a hot bath with epsom salt and essential oils. I make a huge effort to turn off electronics at least 1 hour before bedtime and I do not sleep with any electronics, except my alarm clock, in my bedroom.
What are your daily/weekly nutrition habits that keep you well nourished?
It has been a long journey to get to place of feeling nourished. Surprisingly, it has less to do with what I eat than where my mindset is and how I support myself. In order to feel nourished, I need to make sure that I feel grounded. I need equal parts creative expression, connection to my intuition, and deeply seated in my sense of self. If my soul is nourished, than I am nourished. Habits that keep me there are journaling, walks in nature, and making art.
What are your pain points of being an Alpha Female that you have to problem solve for?
Alpha Females deal with overwhelm. With so much on their plate and the will to continually do more and accomplish more, they can get burdened by mental and physical clutter. This leads to lack of focus and loss of self. Through my book Clear: How to Simplify Your Life & Live More Fearlessly, I teach people how to align their environments to support the success they desire.
What is your definition of happiness?
Happiness comes from within. It cannot be given. It cannot be dependent on an outside force. It isn’t a tangible object. It comes from being you, feeling you, and awareness of who you are. It is being at peace with who you are.
